Patrick Joseph Twomey
Patrick Joseph Twomey (22 February 1892 – 1963) was a New Zealand Marist brother, meter reader and leprosy fund-raiser. He was born in Wellington on 22 February 1892. Twomey devoted most of life in service of lepers and sufferers of tropical diseases in the South West Pacific. He was a member of the Leper Trust Board, and served as its secretary from 1942 until his death in 1963. He also served as a member of the Home Guard during World War II. In the 1947 New Year Honours Twomey was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. In 1953, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal. The Marist Brothers of the Schools, commonly known as simply the Marist Brothers, is an international community of Catholic religious institute of brothers. In 1817, St. Marcellin Champagnat, a Marist priest from France, founded the Marist Brothers with the goal of educating young people, especially those most neglected. While most of the brothers minister in school settings, others work with young people in parishes, religious retreats and spiritual accompaniment, at-risk youth settings, young adult ministry and overseas missions. Lepers
Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease (HD), is a long-term infection by the bacteria '' Mycobacterium leprae'' or '' Mycobacterium lepromatosis''. Infection can lead to damage of the nerves, respiratory tract, skin, and eyes. This nerve damage may result in a lack of ability to feel pain, which can lead to the loss of parts of a person's extremities from repeated injuries or infection through unnoticed wounds. An infected person may also experience muscle weakness and poor eyesight. Leprosy symptoms may begin within one year, but, for some people, symptoms may take 20 years or more to occur. Leprosy is spread between people, although extensive contact is necessary. Leprosy has a low pathogenicity, and 95% of people who contract ''M. leprae'' do not develop the disease. Home Guard (New Zealand)
The Home Guard was a wartime armed service during World War II that was established with the primary objective of defending New Zealand from the threat posed by the Empire of Japan.Archives New Zealand: http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides/war The Home Guard, modelled on its British equivalent, was formed in 1940. Membership was initially voluntary, with a minimum age of 15 but no upper limit. From 1942, membership was compulsory for those in the 35 to 50 age bracket. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
