George Tayloe Winston
George Tayloe Winston (October 12, 1852 – August 26, 1932) was an American educator and university administrator. Early years Winston was born at Windsor, North Carolina, to Patrick Henry Winston and Martha Elizabeth Byrd, and the brother of Francis D. Winston. Winston entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the age of thirteen, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity and the Philanthropic Society. He then studied at the United States Naval Academy from 1868 to 1870, standing at the head of his class of seventy. He could not overcome violent nausea at sea and resigned. In 1870 he went to Cornell University, where he received a bachelor's in literature in 1874 and won membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Later honorary degrees included an A.M. from Davidson College in 1877 and LL.D. degrees from both Duke University and the University of North Carolina in 1911. Francis Donnell Winston
Francis Donnell Winston (October 2, 1857 – January 26, 1941) was a North Carolina politician and judge who served as the tenth Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1905 to 1909 under Governor Robert B. Glenn. Francis Winston, originally a Republican, became a leading Democrat after objecting to the inclusion of African Americans in the political alliance between his party and the Populists. He helped lead the Democrats' "white supremacy" campaigns in 1898 —when he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives— and in 1900. Early life and education Winston lived in Bertie County, North Carolina, where he was raised on a plantation in Windsor called "Windsor Castle." His brother was the university president George T. Robert Watson Winston
Robert Watson Winston (September 12, 1860 – October 14, 1944) was a North Carolina state legislator, lawyer and author who wrote substantial early 20th-century biographies of Andrew Johnson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee. He was a North Carolina Superior Court judge from 1889 to 1895. He was a principal of the law firm Aycock & Winston, his partner being former North Carolina governor Charles B. Aycock. The son of Patrick Henry Winston and Martha Byrd of Windsor Castle in Bertie County, his brother Francis D. Winston was a North Carolina lieutenant governor and also a North Carolina judge. Joseph Winston
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Winston (June 17, 1746 – April 21, 1815) was an American pioneer, planter and American Revolutionary War hero from Surry County, North Carolina, and the first cousin of statesman and Virginia governor Patrick Henry. He also served in the United States House of Representatives and North Carolina Senate. In 1766, Winston moved to the northern part of Rowan County, North Carolina, the area which subsequently became the current Stokes County, North Carolina. Early life Joseph Winston was born on June 17, 1746, in Louisa County in the Colony of Virginia. His ancestors emigrated to the American colonies from Yorkshire, England, in the 17th century. His father was Samuel Winston. In his youth, he fought with the Virginia militia against border Indians in 1763 before moving to the Province of North Carolina in the late 1760s.
