Patrick Dele-Cole
Patrick Dele-Cole (born 1940) is a Nigerian politician, journalist and diplomat who in 1976 became the managing director of the ''Daily Times''. He was also a presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the early 1990s and was Nigeria's ambassador to Argentina and Brazil. He is author of the book ''Modern Traditional Elites in the Politics of Lagos''. Life He attended the University of Otago, New Zealand where he earned a first class honours degree. ''The Daily Times'' is a newspaper with headquarters in Lagos. At its peak, in the 1970s, it was one of the most successful locally owned businesses in Africa. The paper went into decline after it was purchased by the government in 1975. What was left was sold to a private investor in 2004. Folio Communications Limited officially assumed the ownership of the Daily Times of Nigeria Plc on September 3, 2004, after a colorful handover ceremony that was televised. The company was not and is still not a consortium. It is a private limited-liability company. The Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP) is a centre-left political party in Nigeria. It was created alongside the National Republican Convention by former military president Ibrahim Babangida, as part of a democracy project meant to form two detribalized political parties – one slightly to the left and one to the right. During the Nigerian Third Republic it was seen as a moderate party attractive to young radical intellectuals and socialists. In its manifesto, it called for concerted efforts to improve welfare and fight for social justice. Dele Giwa
Dele Giwa (16 March 1947 – 19 October 1986) was a Nigerian journalist, editor and founder of '' Newswatch'' magazine. Early life and career Sumonu Oladele "Baines" Giwa was born on March 16, 1947 to a family working in the palace of Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife. He attended local Authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile-lfe. When his father moved to Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife as a laundry man, he gained admission to that school. Dele Giwa travelled to the USA for his higher education, earning a BA in English from Brooklyn College in 1977 and enrolled for a Graduate program at Fordham University. He worked for ''The New York Times'' as a news assistant for four years after which he relocated to Nigeria to work with ''Daily Times''. Dele Giwa and fellow journalists Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese and Yakubu Mohammed founded ''Newswatch'' in 1984, and the first edition was distributed on January 28, 1985.
