Patrick Barnewall (judge)
Patrick Barnewall (c. 1500–1552) was a leading figure in the Irish Government of the 1530s and 1540s. He owed his position largely to his close links with Thomas Cromwell. He sat in the Irish House of Commons as MP for Dublin County, and held the offices of Solicitor General for Ireland and Master of the Rolls in Ireland. Today he is mainly remembered for his role in founding the King's Inns. He belonged to a junior branch of the family of Lord Trimlestown: his own descendants held the title Viscount Barnewall of Kingsland. Background He was the eldest son of Roger Barnewall of Fieldstown or Fedleston, Clonmethan, County Dublin, a member of the Kingsland branch of the prominent Barnewall family; Roger had married his cousin Alison, daughter of Christopher, 2nd Baron Trimlestown and Elizabeth Plunket, and sister of John Barnewall, 3rd Baron Trimlestown, later Lord Chancellor of Ireland.Ball F. Solicitor General For Ireland
The Solicitor-General for Ireland was the holder of an Irish and then (from the Act of Union 1800) United Kingdom government office. The holder was a deputy to the Attorney-General for Ireland, and advised the Crown on Irish legal matters. On rare occasions, there was also a Deputy Attorney-General, who was distinct from the Solicitor-General. At least two holders of the office, Patrick Barnewall (1534–1550) and Sir Roger Wilbraham (1586-1603), played a leading role in Government, although in Barnewall's case this may be partly because he was also King's Serjeant. As with the Solicitor General for England and Wales, the Solicitor-General for Ireland was usually a barrister rather than a solicitor. The first record of a Solicitor General is in 1511, although the office may well be older than that since the records are incomplete. Early Solicitors almost always held the rank of Serjeant-at-law. Patrick Barnewall (died 1622)
Sir Patrick Barnewall or Barnwall (died 1622), was the eldest son of Sir Christopher Barnewall of Turvey House, Grace Dieu Abbey, and Fieldston. Christopher in turn was the son of the elder Sir Patrick Barnewall, who in 1534 was made Serjeant-at-law (Ireland) and Solicitor-General for Ireland, and in 1550 became Master of the Rolls in Ireland. Patrick's mother was Marion Sherle, daughter of Richard Sherle of Shallon, County Meath: after his father's death, she remarried the prominent judge Sir Lucas Dillon. She died in 1607. Family Sir Christopher was Sheriff of County Dublin in 1560, and is described by Raphael Holinshed, his son-in-law, as 'the lanthorn (i.e. lantern) and light as well of his house' as of that part of Ireland where he dwelt; who being sufficiently furnished as well with the knowledge of the Latin tongue, as of the common laws of England, was zealously bent to the reformation of his country.' Barnewall Baronets
The Barnewall Baronetcy, of Crickstown Castle in the County of Meath, is a title in the Baronetage of Ireland. It was created on 21 February 1623 for Sir Patrick Barnewall. He was the member of a family that had been settled in Ireland since 1172, when Sir Michael de Berneval landed on the coast of Cork. The second and third Baronets both represented Meath in the Irish House of Commons. The fifth Baronet, a descendant of the second son the first Baronet, established his right to the title in 1744. However, his cousin Thomas Barnewall, ''de jure'' sixth Baronet, never assumed the title and it remained dormant from his death in 1790 until 1821, when it was successfully claimed by Robert Barnewall, the eighth Baronet.
