Patrick Bailey
Patrick Bailey (born May 29, 1999) is an American professional baseball catcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball at North Carolina State University, and was selected 13th overall by the Giants in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft, 2020 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2023. Early life Patrick Bailey was born on May 29, 1999, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Bailey attended Wesleyan Christian Academy ('17) in High Point, North Carolina, where he played catcher for the baseball team. In 2016, he played for the U-18 United States national baseball team. In 2017, his senior year, he batted .510/.561/.947 with 13 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, and 33 runs batted in (RBIs) in 96 at bats. Catcher
Catcher is a position in baseball and softball. When a batter takes their turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home) umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. The catcher typically calls for pitches using PitchCom, or hand signals. The calls are based on the pitcher's mechanics and strengths, as well as the batter's tendencies and weaknesses. Essentially, the catcher controls what happens during the game when the ball is not "in play".
