Pat Evanson
Patrick Evanson (13 June 1933 – 27 November 2021) was an Antiguan cricketer. He played in multiple first-class matches for the Leeward Islands in 1959/60. Evanson is known for introducing Vivian Richards to the sport of cricket and giving him his first bat. A proud graduate of the Antigua Grammar School, Evanson’s effect on the island can still be felt. Evanson died on 27 November 2021, at the age of 88. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is of three or more days scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but the term was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the International Cricket Council, Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Leeward Islands Cricket Team
The Leeward Islands cricket team is a first-class cricket team representing the member countries of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association, an associate of the West Indies Cricket Board. Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat, British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and Sint Maarten are members of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association. The team does not participate in any international competitions (though Antigua and Barbuda took part at the 1998 Commonwealth Games), but rather in inter-regional competitions in the Caribbean, such as the Regional Four Day Competition and the Regional Super50. The team competes in regional cricket under the franchise name Leeward Islands Hurricanes. The Leeward Islands has won a total of ten domestic titles – four in first class cricket and six in one-day cricket, but their last title was in 1997–98 when they won the double (although the first-class title was shared with Guyana). The Leeward Islands cricket team is a composite cricket team representing the member associations of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association, which itself is a member association of the larger West Indies Cricket Board. The team incorporates players from several small islands in the Leeward Islands grouping of the Lesser Antilles, an island arc in the Caribbean Sea. These are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Nevis, Saint Kitts, Sint Maarten, and the United States Virgin Islands, although the sport is most popular in the islands that previously were part of the British Leeward Islands colony (in existence from 1833 to 1958). Although matches were played in the islands from the late 19th century, a combined team was not formed until the early 1950s, when semi-annual matches against a representative Windward Islands team commenced.
