Francis Daniel Pastorius
Francis Daniel Pastorius (September 26, 1651) was a German-born educator, lawyer, poet, and public official. He was the founder of Germantown, Philadelphia, Germantown, Pennsylvania, now part of Philadelphia, the first permanent German-American settlement and the gateway for subsequent emigrants from Germany. Early life Franz Daniel Pastorius was born in the Franconian town of Sommerhausen, to a prosperous Lutheranism, Lutheran family. He received a Gymnasium (Germany), Gymnasium education in Windsheim (also in Franconia), where his family moved in 1659. He was trained as a lawyer in some of the best German universities of his day, including the University of Altdorf, the University of Strasbourg and the University of Jena, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. He started his practice in Windsheim and continued it in Frankfurt, Frankfurt-am-Main. John Francis Anthony Pastorius III, also known as Jaco Pastorius (; December 1, 1951 – September 21, 1987), was an American jazz bassist, composer, and producer. Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential bassists of all time, Pastorius recorded albums as a solo artist, band leader, and as a member of the jazz fusion group Weather Report from 1976 to 1981. He also collaborated with numerous artists, including Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell. His bass style was influenced by funk and employed the use of Fretless bass guitar, fretless bass, lyrical solos, bass Chord (music), chords and innovative use of harmonics. As of 2017, he was the only one of seven bassists inducted into the ''DownBeat'' Jazz Hall of Fame to have been known for their work on the electric bass, and he has been lauded as among the best bassists of all time. Operation Pastorius
Operation Pastorius was a failed German intelligence plan for sabotage inside the United States during World War II. The operation was staged in June 1942 and was to be directed against strategic American economic targets. The operation was named by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, chief of the German ''Abwehr'', for Francis Daniel Pastorius, the organizer of the first organized settlement of Germans in America. The plan involved eight German saboteurs who had previously spent time in the United States. The plan quickly failed after two of the agents, George John Dasch and Ernest Peter Burger, defected to the Federal Bureau of Investigation shortly after being deployed, betraying the other six. A military tribunal – whose constitutionality was challenged to the Supreme Court in ''Ex parte Quirin'' – sentenced all eight to death later that year. President Franklin D.
