Passo Del Tonale
Tonale Pass () (el. 1883 m./6178 ft.) is a high mountain pass in northern Italy across the Rhaetian Alps, between Lombardy and Trentino. It connects Valcamonica and Val di Sole. It is delimited by the Ortler Alps to the north and the Adamello range to the south. The pass has hotels and shops for tourists in winter, as the land around the pass is used for winter sports – mainly skiing (see Adamello Ski Raid) and snowboarding. During World War I the place was heavily fought for between Italians holding Western side (Lombardy) and the troops of Habsburg Empire holding the Eastern side (Trentino). A memorial for the fallen Italian soldiers was erected during the fascist period. Tonalite
Tonalite is an igneous rock, igneous, plutonic (Intrusive rock, intrusive) rock (geology), rock, of felsic composition, with phaneritic (coarse-grained) texture. Feldspar is present as plagioclase (typically oligoclase or andesine) with alkali feldspar making up less than 10% of the total feldspar content. Quartz (SiO2) is present as more than 20% of the total quartz-alkali feldspar-plagioclase-feldspathoid (QAPF classification, QAPF) content of the rock. Amphiboles and biotite are common in lesser quantities, while accessory minerals include apatite, magnetite and zircon. In older references tonalite is sometimes used as a synonym for quartz diorite. However the current IUGS QAPF diagram, classification defines tonalite as having greater than 20% quartz, while quartz diorite varies its quartz content from 5 to 20%. This is a list of the highest paved roads in Europe. It includes roads that are at least long and whose culminating point is at least above sea level. This height approximately corresponds to that of the highest settlements in Europe and to the tree line in several mountain ranges such as the Alps and the Pyrenees, where most of the highest roads are located. Some of the listed roads are closed to motorized vehicles, although they are normally all accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Adamello Ski Raid
The Adamello Ski Raid is an annual ski mountaineering competition at the Italian Tonale Pass declared as the final race of the European Cup of Ski Mountaineering by the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC). Starting point of the race is the Tonale Pass, and the release point is in Ponte di Legno. The 40 km race track which has to be covered in teams by three and with classical equipment includes an altitude difference of 3,400 m for the ascent and 4,000 m for skiing down. The highest point is upside 3,000 m. The Adamello Ski Raid is a stage of La Grande Course that includes the most important ski mountaineering competitions of the season.
