Pascagoula Station
Pascagoula station is a closed intercity train station in Pascagoula, Mississippi, United States. It originally the served the Louisville and Nashville Railroad but was most recently a stop for Amtrak. The station is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Depot, and was designated a Mississippi Landmark by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. In addition, the station serves as an art gallery owned by the Singing River Art Association. Service will return to Pascagoula with the establishment of the ''Mardi Gras Service'' between New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama on August 18, 2025. History The station building was constructed in 1904. L&N added enlarged the waiting room in 1918 as well as enlarged and altered some of the rooms. Pascagoula ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It is the principal city of the Pascagoula metropolitan area, and is part of the Gulfport, Mississippi, Gulfport–Biloxi, Mississippi, Biloxi–Pascagoula Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula combined statistical area, combined statistical area and the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. The ''Pan-American'' was a passenger train operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) between Cincinnati, Ohio and New Orleans, Louisiana. It operated from 1921 until 1971. From 1921 to 1965 a section served Memphis, Tennessee via Bowling Green, Kentucky. The ''Pan-American'' was the L&N's flagship train until the introduction of the '' Humming Bird'' in 1946. Its name honored the substantial traffic the L&N carried to and from the seaports on the Gulf of Mexico. The ''Pan-American'' was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971. ''The Clarion Ledger'' is an American daily newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the second-oldest company in the state of Mississippi, and is one of the few newspapers in the nation that continues to circulate statewide. It is an operating division of Gannett River States Publishing Corporation, owned by Gannett. History The paper traces its roots to ''The Eastern Clarion,'' founded in Jasper County, Mississippi, in 1837. Later that year, it was sold and moved to Meridian, Mississippi. After the American Civil War, it was moved to Jackson, the capital, and merged with ''The Standard''. It soon became known as ''The Clarion''. In 1888, ''The Clarion'' merged with the ''State Ledger'' and became known as the ''Daily Clarion-Ledger''. The ''Gulf Coast Limited'' was a passenger train service operated by Amtrak along the Gulf Coast of the United States. It ran daily between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama, with stops in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Mississippi, Gulfport, Biloxi, Mississippi, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, Mississippi, Pascagoula, Mississippi.
