Partridge 1885
Partridge is documented as being the world's oldest, still fully operational classic racing yacht. History of Partridge "Partridge" was built in 1885 at the Camper and Nicholson boatyard in Gosport, Hampshire, England, 'the oldest leisure marine company in the world'. The company was originally a shipyard in Gosport, Camper and Nicholson has since become a yacht and marina management company. Partridge is recognised as a UK National Historic Ship and was designed by John Beavor-Webb and launched on 2 June by Miss Nora Lapthorn. John Beavor-Webb began his career in England but worked in the US after the 1880s. In 1885, when Partridge was launched, his cutter Genesta competed in the America's Cup and he was working on the designs of a 90-ton cutter for a Lt. William Henn. John Beavor-Webb
John Beavor-Webb (1849 - March 11, 1927) was a British and American naval architect. He was a designer of sailing yachts, including Partridge 1885, a UK National Historic Ship and the America's Cup The America's Cup, informally known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded in the sport of sailing. Dixon Kemp
Dixon Kemp (1839 – 21 November 1899), a British naval architect, was a founder of the Yacht Racing Association (now the Royal Yachting Association) and at one time its secretary. He was a founder of Lloyd's Register of Yachts. Kemp was born in Ryde, a British seaside town on the Isle of Wight. For a time, he edited the '' Isle of Wight Observer''. He was also yachting editor of '' The Field''. Kemp was an authority on the design of yachts and yacht racing. Of his famous yachts, ''Firecrest'' (1892) was used by Alain Gerbault in his solo circumnavigation of the globe, and was the vessel he sailed to win the Blue Water Medal in 1923. His '' Amazon'' is still afloat and made a Trans-Atlantic crossing in 2011. The British Admiralty ordered copies of his ''Yacht and Boat Sailing'' supplied to the Navy. Tollesbury is a village in England, located on the Essex coast at the mouth of the River Blackwater. Camper And Nicholsons
Camper and Nicholson was a yacht design and manufacturing company based in Gosport, England, for over two hundred years, constructing many significant vessels, such as Gipsy Moth IV and Prince Philip's yacht Bloodhound. Its customers included Thomas Sopwith, William Kissam Vanderbilt II and George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough. Its yachts competed in The America's Cup, The Fastnet Race, the Olympics, the Ocean Race (Whitbread Round the World Race) and many other yacht races. Today the name is used by a yacht brokerage firm. History Origin In 1782 Francis Calense Amos (1748–1824), who had trained as a shipwright in London, founded a shipyard in Gosport, leasing the land from the Royal Naval Dockyard.
