The Parramatta Patriots were one of the eight foundation teams of the now defunct Australian Baseball League. They disbanded after the 1990–91 season due to heavy financial losses and were replaced by the Sydney Blues in the following season. The Australian Baseball League (ABL) was a baseball league, established in 1987 and disbanded in 1999. Formation Before the formation of the Australian Baseball League, the Claxton Shield, established in , was Australia's premier baseball tournament. The idea of an Australian baseball league was first conceived in , possibly prompted by the success of Australia's National Basketball League. The final Claxton Shield competition was held in 1988 by the Auburn Baseball Club in New South Wales at its home ground of Oriole Park. Auburn funded all visiting teams' fares and accommodation with the expectation of recouping from gate takings and increased revenue at its social club. Oriole Park (Sydney)
Oriole Park was the home of the Auburn Baseball Club in New South Wales, Australia. It hosted the Claxton Shield in 1970, 1975, 1980, and 1981. The field was extended and had lighting added prior to hosting the 1980 competition. The Sydney Storm, originally Sydney Blues were a team in the now defunct Australian Baseball League. The franchise featured in every post season throughout its existence and won the Claxton Shield once. History The Storm were formed for the 1992-93 ABL Championship as the Sydney Blues after purchasing the licence of the Parramatta Patriots. The team was re-branded the Sydney Storm for the 1997-98 season, After legal action taken by Cricket NSW, The franchise owners then changed the team name from Blue to Storm, As the NSW Cricket team was also known as the Blues. The franchise won one ABL championship under their former name, defeating the Melbourne Reds in the 1995 championship, also finishing runner-up twice - once (as the Blues) against the Brisbane Bandits in 1994, and in the final ABL season in 1999, defeated by the Gold Coast Cougars. Australian Baseball League (1989–1999) Teams
The Australian Baseball League (ABL) is a professional baseball league in Australia. The league is governed by the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF). It uses the same name as a now-defunct competition held during the 1990s, and though it shares some history of the original league with the Claxton Shield awarded to winners of both competitions, it is considered to be a separate competition. Because the ABL's season takes place from November to February, the ABL is one of baseball's recognised winter leagues (although it is summer in Australia when the season takes place), where minor-league prospects in North America are often assigned as an English-speaking alternative to the primary Spanish-speaking Latin America-based winter leagues.
