Parmod Chand
Parmod Chand (sometimes known as Pramod Chand) (born 1955 or 1956) is a Fijian politician and former member of the Parliament of Fiji. He is a member of the National Federation Party (NFP). Background and family life Chand was born in Labasa on Vanua Levu. His father was NFP politician Vishnu Prasad. He worked as a businessman and sugarcane farmer, and ran a bus company. He has served as president of the Fiji Bus Operators Association. Chand is also a pastor for the Assemblies of God church in Labasa. Political career Chand served on the Labasa town council between 1992 and 1996. He was first elected to the House of Representatives of Fiji in the 1994 general election, winning the Macuata East Indian Communal Constituency for the NFP. He contested the Macuata East Open Constituency in the 1999 and 2006 elections, losing on both occasions by large margins. Labasa
Labasa (pronounced ) is a town in Fiji with a population of 27,949 at the most recent census held in 2007. Labasa is located in Macuata Province, in the north-eastern part of the island of Vanua Levu, and is the largest town on the island. The town itself is located on a delta formed by three rivers – the Wailevu, the Labasa (after which the town is named), and the Qawa. The latter two are connected by an 8-kilometre canal. The township historically served the sugar cane farms and farm workers with harvesting season resulting in significant seasonal employment although the township is now less dependent on the sugar industry. The farmers market offers seasonal produce and seafood. The main street is lined with small family run businesses, supermarkets and restaurants offering a lively pedestrian thoroughfare. 2022 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 December 2022 to elect the 55 members of Parliament. The elections took place following the passage of controversial electoral amendments. In addition to a struggling economy, significant campaign issues included the national debt, ethnic tensions and tackling poverty. During the preliminary count, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app displaying the results experienced a glitch, prompting FEO to take down the app temporarily. Once the app was back in operation, the vote tally showed the ruling FijiFirst party leading, resulting in five opposition parties demanding a recount and for the counting process to cease. Observers said they had not seen any significant voting irregularities, adding that an initial anomaly with an app showing the results had been rectified. 2018 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 November 2018. The result was a victory for the ruling FijiFirst party of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, which received just over 50% of the vote and 27 of the 51 seats in Parliament, a loss of five seats. The main opposition party, Social Democratic Liberal Party, gained six seats, whilst the National Federation Party retained its three seats. The elections also saw female representation in Parliament rise to nearly 20 percent, with 10 of the 51 members being women. Roko Tupou Takaiwai Senirewa Draunidalo is a Fijian lawyer and politician. She is a former member of the Parliament of Fiji and from 2018 to 2022 was the president of the HOPE party. Background Draunidalo is the daughter of former Fiji Deputy Prime Minister Adi Kuini Speed, a Paramount Chief from Nadroga-Navosa, who was deposed in the 2000 Fijian coup d'état, and her first husband, Savenaca Draunidalo, who served in the cabinet of Laisenia Qarase, which was deposed in the 2006 Fijian coup d'état. Her stepfather, Timoci Bavadra was briefly Prime Minister of Fiji in 1987, before being ousted in the 1987 military coup by Sitiveni Rabuka.
