The counties of England are a type of subdivision of England. Counties have been used as administrative areas in England since Anglo-Saxon times. There are three definitions of county in England: the 48 ceremonial counties used for the purposes of lieutenancy; the 84 metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties for local government; and the 39 historic counties. In most cases a ceremonial county shares its name with a local government county, but often covering a wider area. The historic counties of England were mostly formed as shires or divisions of the earlier kingdoms, which gradually united by the 10th century to become England. The counties were initially used primarily for the administration of justice, overseen by a sheriff. Craig Paul Tracey (born 21 August 1974) is a British Conservative Party politician, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Warwickshire from 2015 until his defeat in 2024. Early life Tracey was born in Durham, and attended the city's Framwellgate Moor Comprehensive School. His mother's family were from a mining background while his father was one of fifteen children. Tracey's father came to England from Ireland during the 1960s, while his mother is a native of the North East. Tracey describes himself as half Irish and half Geordie. His parents founded a business in Durham, and after leaving school at 17, Tracey started his own insurance broker's business in 1996, at the age of 21. Christopher Mark Clarkson (born 12 November 1982) is a British Conservative Party politician who was Member of Parliament (MP) for Heywood & Middleton from 2019 to 2024. Manuela Perteghella (born ) is an Italian-born British Liberal Democrat politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Stratford-on-Avon since 2024. Early life and education Perteghella was born in Italy. She graduated from the University of North London with a Bachelor of Arts in English and theatre studies, and then pursued a master's in literary translation and a PhD in theatre and translation, both from the University of East Anglia. John Slinger
John Anthony Slinger (born January 1975) is a British Labour politician who has served as the Member of Parliament for Rugby since 2024. Life and early career Slinger was born in Manchester, and grew up in Gloucestershire. He joined the Labour Party in 1992 at the age of 17. He studied at Durham University and was formerly a partner at strategic communications company Consulum, founded by former employees of lobbying firm Bell Pottinger. According to his LinkedIn page, he has also worked for Tony Blair Associates, as a researcher for Ann Clwyd and Julia Drown, and was in rock bands in Leeds.
