Parkland Region
Parkland is an informal geographic region of the Canadian province of Manitoba, located between Lakes Manitoba and Winnipegosis on the east and the Manitoba–Saskatchewan border on the west. The largest population centre is the city of Dauphin, and the second largest is the town of Swan River. Riding Mountain National Park, Duck Mountain Provincial Park, and Asessippi Provincial Park are also located in the region, as well as Manitoba's highest point, Baldy Mountain. Together with the Westman Region to the south, Parkland composes the broader Prairie Mountain region, and is provided health services via Prairie Mountain Health. As of 2021, the Parkland region had a population of 41,575. Sifton, Manitoba
Sifton is an unincorporated community located in the Rural Municipality of Dauphin in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The community is approximately 20 km north of Dauphin in the Parkland area. History Large influxes of Ukrainians settled this region in the mid-1890s, part of a mass immigration undertaken by the federal government. Sifton is named after Minister of the Interior Clifford Sifton, who viewed farmers from Eastern Europe as ideal for settling and opening the Canadian West. About 250 families both in town and in the surrounding countryside today call Sifton, Manitoba their home. A spinning wheel mounted on a cairn in town is the only visible reminder today that Sifton is also the birthplace of Canada's iconic fashion item of the 1950s, the Mary Maxim sweater. Manitoba House
Manitoba House is the name of a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post as well as a separate settlement adjacent to the post. The site is in the present-day Rural Municipality of Alonsa. Trading post The first trading post at or near the Manitoba House site was operated for one season, 1797–98,by a Hudson's Bay Company servant, John Best, somewhere near the Lake Manitoba Narrows. Alonsa
Alonsa is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district located in north central Manitoba in the Rural Municipality of Alonsa. History Alonsa grew in the early 1900s with the coming of the railroad. The rail line was never extended beyond Alonsa and in 1961, the rail service ended. With the loss of the rail service, the population began to drop. The area is accessible now by Provincial Trunk Highway 50. On August 3, 2018, an EF4 tornado touched down southeast of the town. It tossed vehicles and trailers and ripped a home from its foundation, killing 77-year-old Jack Furrie. It was the strongest tornado of 2018 and the first violent (EF4 or EF5) tornado in Canada since the 2007 Elie, Manitoba tornado. Rural Municipality Of Alonsa
Alonsa is a rural municipality (RM) in the province of Manitoba, western Canada. It lies on the west side of Lake Manitoba. Located within the borders of the municipality is the Indian reserve of Ebb and Flow 52, as well as the Margaret Bruce Beach Provincial Park, located east of the town of Alonsa, on one of a series of sand ridges that extend the length of the west side lake. The park is currently under lease to a private operator but development plans include a provincial campground and day use facility. The incorporation of Alonsa on 1 January 1945 was as a Local Government District (LGD).
