Henry Parkes
Sir Henry Parkes, (27 May 1815 – 27 April 1896) was a colonial Australian politician and the longest-serving non-consecutive Premier of New South Wales, premier of the Colony of New South Wales, the present-day state of New South Wales in the Commonwealth of Australia. He has been referred to as the "Father of Federation" due to his early promotion for the Federation of Australia, federation of the six colonies of Australia, as an early critic of United Kingdom, British Convicts in Australia, convict transportation and as a proponent for the expansion of the Australian Transport in Australia, continental rail network. Sir Edward Walter Parkes DL FREng (19 May 1926 – 25 September 2019) was Vice-Chancellor of City University London from 1974 to 1978 and of the University of Leeds from 1983 to 1991. Jordan David Parkes (born 26 July 1989) is an English football midfielder. Playing career Parkes left Parmiter's School in Garston, Hertfordshire at sixteen to pursue a football career at Watford. His debut came in a 2006 League Cup second round tie against Accrington Stanley, in which he scored a penalty in the shootout, won 6–5 by Watford. Parkes signed his first professional contract with Watford on 1 February 2007. In March 2007, Parkes was called up to the England under-18 squad by manager Brian Eastick, making his debut in the 4–1 win against Holland. He has subsequently been called up by England under-19's. James William Parkes (22 December 1896 – 10 August 1981) was an Anglican clergyman, soldier, historian, and social activist. With the publication of ''The Jew and His Neighbour'' in 1929, he created the foundations of a Christian re-evaluation of Judaism. He also published under the pseudonym John Hadham. Early life Parkes was born in Guernsey on the Channel Islands in 1896. He was the son of an English-born tomato grower, and had two siblings, David and Molly. Parkes was educated at Elizabeth College. Parkes lost his mother at the age of 14, and lost both of his siblings during the First World War. While at school, he won an Open Scholarship to Hertford College, Oxford, but joined up to fight in the war. He enlisted as a Private in the Artists Rifles and went out to France, but was immediately hospitalised for three months with a serious illness contracted from drinking contaminated water. Harry Parkes (4 January 1920 – 4 March 2009) was an English footballer of the 1940s and 1950s. Parkes was a one club man having only played for Aston Villa. He is widely regarded as one of Aston Villa's most popular players of all time. Early life Parkes was born in Erdington, Birmingham on 4 January 1920. Football career Parkes played in several positions including centre-forward, right-half, and winger, but he played his best football at full-back. He joined Aston Villa in April 1939 as an amateur from Sutton Coldfield club Boldmere St. Michaels. He turned professional in August 1939. He appeared for the club 345 times scoring 4 goals; plus another 144 wartime games. He missed only 12 League games in seven seasons from 1947 to 1954. Harold Arnold "Harry" Parkes (September 1888 – March 1947) was an English footballer and the manager of various football clubs in the 1920s and 1930s. Playing career Parkes attended Halesowen Grammar School and played for local sides Halesowen Amateurs, Coombs Wood and Halesowen before joining West Bromwich Albion in February 1906. His debut came against Notts County in March 1907 in the FA Cup and he played in the semi-final defeat against Everton later that season. He left after falling out with the West Bromwich Albion management and joined Coventry City in May 1908. He played 170 league and cup games for Coventry, scoring 38 times before returning to West Bromwich Albion in May 1914. Sir Harry Smith Parkes (24 February 1828 – 22 March 1885) was a British diplomat who served as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary and Consul General of the United Kingdom to the Empire of Japan from 1865 to 1883 and the Chinese Qing Empire from 1883 to 1885, and Minister to Korea in 1884. Gregory Lawrence Parkes (born April 2, 1964) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. Bishop Parkes has been serving as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg in Florida since 2017. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee in Florida from 2012 to 2016. He is the tallest bishop in the United States at 6’8”. His brother Stephen Parkes is bishop of the Diocese of Savannah; they are one of only 11 pairs of sibling-bishops in U.S. Catholic history. In June 2022, he had his right leg amputated below the knee after years of treatment were unsuccessful.
