Parkdale Plaza
Parkdale Plaza was a shopping mall located in Corpus Christi, Texas, United States. It opened in 1957 and closed in 2010 to be torn down for a Walmart. 1960s The original three major stores at Parkdale Plaza were JCPenney, Whites Stores, and H-E-B. Other major tenants included Western Auto, Piccadilly Cafeterias, Larry Robinson (a Corpus Christi photography studio), and the Toy House, as well as Neisner's five and dime. When H-E-B moved, Texas Gold Stamp center also owned by H-E-B took its place as an anchor store. JCPenney moved to Padre Staples Mall (now La Palmera) in 1970. A Woolco store was later added to the plaza. By 1982, Parkdale Plaza had lost Lichensteins', Whites, H-E-B, and Woolco. Linens N' More took over the Old H-E-B location, and Decorator's Gallery took over the Whites Stores located in the back. A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. Western Auto Supply Company—known more widely as Western Auto—was a specialty retail chain of stores that supplied automobile parts and accessories. La Palmera, originally Padre Staples Mall, is an indoor and open-air super-regional shopping mall located along the shopping corridor of South Padre Island Drive at Staples St. in Corpus Christi, Texas, United States. It has over 100 mainline stores and three anchor stores Dillard's, JCPenney, and Macy's (previously Foley's). Mall history In October 1968, the city issued its largest building permit for Ennis S. Joslin and Roy Smith to construct a mall on 44 acres of farmland. Woolco
Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. While the American stores were closed in 1983, the chain remained active in Canada until it was sold in 1994 to rival Walmart, which was looking to enter the Canadian market. Eckerd Corporation was an American drug store chain that was headquartered in Largo, Florida, and toward the end of its life, in Warwick, Rhode Island. The chain had approximately 2,800 stores in 23 states as far west as Arizona. In November 1996, Eckerd drugs was purchased by JCPenney. In April 2004, the company, the fourth largest drug chain in the U.S., was broken up in a $4.52 billion deal, with approximately 1,269 stores in Florida, Louisiana and Texas, along with Eckerd's $1.3 billion mail order pharmacy, sold to CVS Corporation (now CVS Health).
