Park Grange F.C. was an English association football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. History The club was formed as Providence (sometimes referred to as Sheffield Providence) in 1874, originally playing under Sheffield rules. It competed in the FA Cup on three occasions under the Providence name before changing to Park Grange in the summer of 1882 following a merger. Providence years The club's most competitive run in the Cup was its first, in 1879-80, when it received a bye in the first round and was drawn with Sheffield F.C. in the second. No other Sheffield clubs had entered the competition. Providence had "not generally been considered a formidable club", but had a "pushing executive" and, with a near-monopoly on choosing a squad for the competition, "got several of the crack players of the district to qualify for the tie under notice"; the Sporting Life described the match as "between the Sheffield Association and the Sheffield Club". The FA Cup, from this season onwards, began to incorporate a series of qualifying rounds in order to determine qualifiers for the actual Cup competition itself. The qualifying rounds were made up of amateur teams, semi-professional teams, and professional sides not yet associated with the Football League. The only game to be played on Christmas Day took place, Linfield Athletic beating Cliftonville 7–0. Everton became the first Football League team to withdraw from the Cup after drawing Ulster in the first qualifying round. The 1887–88 Football Association Challenge Cup was the 17th staging of the FA Cup, England's oldest football tournament. One hundred and forty-nine teams entered, twenty-one more than the previous season, although four of the one hundred and forty-nine never played a match. This was the last season in which there were no qualifying rounds, so all entering clubs were placed in the first round. Long Eaton Rangers Football Club was a football club based in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England, which, for a brief period in the 1880s, had a legitimate claim to being one of the best teams in the country. They were founding members of the second ever league, The Combination, in 1888, and when that folded, the Football Alliance in 1889. History The club was founded in 1881, playing in fields that were opposite what would, in 1884, become the Long Eaton Recreation Ground.
