Vice Admiral P Murugesan is a former Flag Officer of the Indian Navy. He served as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) from March 2015 to May 2016. Education Career Murugesan was the Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command and Chief of Personnel at New Delhi. Vice admiral is a three-star flag officer rank in the Indian Navy. It is the second-highest active rank in the Indian Navy. The Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (ACNS) is a senior appointment in the Indian Navy. The ACNS is an assistant PSO (Principal Staff Officer) at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi. At present, there are eight appointments of ACNS who head different directorates. The appointments are held by a Two star officer in the rank of Rear Admiral. Abhay Raghunath Karve PVSM, AVSM is a retired Indian Navy Vice Admiral. He last served as the 27th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command. He retired on 30 July 2018 and was succeeded by Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla. Education Karve did his undergraduate studies at National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. He is a graduate of Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington, Ooty, and has undergone the Naval Higher Command Course from College of Naval Warfare at Mumbai. He is also a post graduate in National Security and Strategy from the National Defense University, Washington DC (USA). Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) is a military award of India given to recognize "distinguished service of an exceptional order" to all ranks of the armed forces. The award is a peacetime equivalent of Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal, which is a Wartime Distinguished Service decoration. The award can also be granted posthumously.
