''Par 27'' is a Canadian sports television series which aired on CBC Television from 1978 to 1980. Premise Each episode featured a contest between two golfers who each played nine balls towards a hole. Each shot was rated at par 3, thus the total of "Par 27" per player. Of the nine shots per player, three were from the tee, three were situated 50 yards from the green and the remaining three from a bunker. Al Balding and Bob Panasik provided commentary with host Ernie Afaganis. Ernie Afaganis
Ernie Afaganis (born ) is a Canadian sports broadcaster, known for his work at CBC Sports. He was born in Lethbridge, Alberta. Career After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Washington University, Afaganis returned to Alberta where in 1953 he joined CFRN in Edmonton. In 1961, he joined CBC Television at CBXT, also in Edmonton. From there, he gained prominence as a sportscaster on CBC's national service. He was host of CBC's ''Sports Weekend'' programme in its debut season. He was also a sideline reporter for the CFL on CBC. Awards and recognition In 1977 he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. In November 2007, he was inducted into the CBC Sports Hall of Fame. In 1988, he was inducted to the Football Reporters of Canada hall of fame, a journalistic honour associated with the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Al Balding
Allan George Balding (April 29, 1924 – July 30, 2006) was a Canadian professional golfer, who won four events on the PGA Tour. In 1955 he became the first Canadian to win a PGA Tour event in the United States; Canadians Ken Black (1936 Vancouver Jubilee Open), Jules Huot (1937 General Brock Open) and Pat Fletcher (1954 Canadian Open) had won PGA Tour events in Canada. Biography Balding was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 29, 1924. Growing up during the Great Depression, Balding quit school in the 7th grade and began caddying at the nearby Islington golf course, despite not previously golfing before. Balding enlisted in the Canadian Army at 19 for during World War II, and saw duty in France and Germany. Balding enlisted thinking that his small stature would land him in the Service Corps, however he was assigned to the 13th Field Battery of the 2nd Artillery division as a driver-mechanic. Bob Panasik
Robert R. Panasik (born October 20, 1941) is a Canadian professional golfer. Born in Windsor, Ontario, he was known as Bob Panasiuk until 1970 when he changed his name to Panasik so it would be "easier to pronounce". In 1957, at the age of 15, Panasik made the halfway cut in the Canadian Open to become the youngest player ever to play all four rounds in a PGA Tour event, a record which stood until April 2013 when his record was broken by Guan Tianlang. He went on to win the Canadian PGA Championship twice as well as many provincial tournaments in Canada. He also qualified for the U.S. Open on several occasions and represented Canada in three World Cups. Panasik continued his success as a senior, playing one full season on the Senior PGA Tour (later known as the Champions Tour) in 1994. Jasper is a specialized municipality and townsite in western Alberta within the Canadian Rockies. The townsite is in the Athabasca River valley and is the commercial centre of Jasper National Park. In golf, par is the predetermined number of strokes that a proficient (scratch, or zero handicap) golfer should require to complete a hole, a round (the sum of the pars of the played holes), or a tournament (the sum of the pars of each round). For scoring purposes, a golfer's number of strokes is compared with the par score to determine how much the golfer was either "over par", "under par", or was "even with/equal to par".
