Papagou
Papagou ( or Παπάγος ''Papagos'') is a suburban town and municipal unit in the eastern part of the Athens#Athens Urban Area, Athens agglomeration, Greece. The town is named after Marshal Alexandros Papagos, a general who led the Greek Army in the Second World War and the Greek Civil War, before becoming Prime Minister of Greece. The Ministry of National Defence (Greece), Greek Ministry of National Defense is located in town. Papagou was part of the municipality of Cholargos until 1965, when it became a separate community. It became a municipality in 1982. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Papagou-Cholargos, of which it is a municipal unit according to the Kallikratis Plan. Geography Papagou is situated west of the Hymettus mountains, 6 km east of Athens city centre. The municipal unit has an area of 3.375 km2. Cholargos
Cholargos (, also: ''Holargos'') is a town and a suburb in the Athens urban area, Greece, located northeast of the Athens city proper and about away from Syntagma Square. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Papagou-Cholargos, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 3.950 km2. The main thoroughfare is Mesogeion Avenue, which connects Cholargos with central Athens and the A6 motorway. Cholargos was the name of a deme of ancient Attica. Zografou
Zografou () is a suburban town of approximately 70,000 inhabitants in the eastern part of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. It was named after the Greek politician Ioannis Zografos. To the east of Zografou lies mount Hymettus. The area, being close to the centre of Athens, developed similar urban sprawl characteristics, with high-rise buildings of even 10 stories tall being the norm. The municipality is also home to the National and Kapodistrian university of Athens and National Technical university of Athens campuses and a significant percentage of the local population are students, faculty and employees of both institutions. A62 Motorway (Greece)
The A62 motorway, also known as the Hymettus Ring Road (), and formerly signed as the A64 motorway until 2024, is a branch of the A6 motorway (Greece), A6 motorway in the Attiki Odos motorway network. It is named after the Hymettus mountain range, which it partly encircles. The motorway serves parts of eastern Athens, and planning is underway to extend it to the southern suburbs with a tunnel following Mount Hymettus to Elliniko, and it would ebd at Vouliagmenis Avenue. Another extension from the north-east end will extend further eastwards to the port of Rafina. History On 4 December 2015, the Greek government proposed to renumber the A64 as the A62: In practice, the renumbering had not taken place until 2024, because road signs still used to show the motorway as the A64. Hymettus
Hymettus (), also Hymettos (; ; ), is a mountain range in the Athens area of Attica, East Central Greece. It is also colloquially known as ''Trellós'' (crazy) or ''Trellóvouno'' (crazy mountain); the latter originates from the French "très long" (very long) in awe of its winding length of 16 km, as used by French travelers during the occupation of Greece by the Ottomans. Hymettus was assigned the status of a protected area in the EU's Natura 2000 ecological network. Geography The highest point of the mountain range is Evzonas (Εύζωνας) with an elevation of . Alexandros Papagos
Alexandros Papagos (; 9 December 1883 – 4 October 1955) was a Greek military officer who led the Hellenic Army in World War II and the later stages of the subsequent Greek Civil War. The only Greek army career officer to rise to the rank of Field Marshal, Papagos became the first Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff from 1950 until his resignation the following year. He then entered politics, founding the nationalist Greek Rally party and becoming the country's Prime Minister after his victory in the 1952 elections. His premiership was shaped by the Cold War and the aftermath of the Greek Civil War, and was defined by several key events, including Greece becoming a member of NATO; U.S. military bases being allowed on Greek territory and the formation of a powerful and vehemently anti-communist security apparatus.
