Papa Ibra Tall
Papa Ibra Tall (1935–2015) was a Senegalese tapestry weaver, painter, and illustrator. He is known for his role in the Dakar School () art movement, and as an early professor at the École Nationale des Beaux Arts. Biography Papa Ibra Tall was born in 1935 in Tivaouane, in the Thiès Region of Senegal. His artistic career began oil painting under the tutelage of amateur French painters in Dakar. In 1955, he studied architecture at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris, where he was exposed to the Négritude movement and provided illustrations for the Présence Africaine. He later attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and pursued instruction in Sèvres with the assistance of Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor, where he studied painting, serigraphy, tapestry, mosaics, and comparative pedagogy. Tivaouane
Tivaouane or Tivawan (; ) is a city and urban commune located in the Thiès Region of Senegal. History Tivaouane was part of the Wolof kingdom of Cayor, and was at one time its capital. It was first described to Europeans in the 15th century by Venetian explorer Luigi Cada-Mosto. In 1904, it was the fifth largest city in Sénégal after Saint-Louis, Dakar, Rufisque and Gorée. It is also one of the sacred places of the Tijaniyya Sufi brotherhood. Each week, followers come to visit the tombs of religious leaders, especially that of El-Hadji Malick Sy. Musée Dynamique
The Dynamic Museum () is a museum in Dakar, Senegal. History The museum was part of a series of cultural projects initiated by President Léopold Sédar Senghor. The museum was inaugurated on March 31, 1966, by Senghor and André Malraux and played an important role in the Dakar Festival of Negro Arts, which ran from April 1 to April 24, 1966. The museum was designed to act as a decolonial celebration of African culture, and it featured artifacts and history from the Iron Age Nok culture all the way up to the modern era. Its first exhibition featured over 600 pieces of African art which were borrowed from 50 museums around the world. The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris also loaned the Dynamic Museum works from Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, and Amedeo Modigliani for an exhibit. Africultures
''Africultures'' is a publication of arts and culture about and from Africa and its diasporas. Based in Paris, it was founded in 1997 under the impetus of Olivier Barlet by journalists and academics such as Virginie Andriamirado, Gérald Arnaud, Tanella Boni, Sylvie Chalaye, Christophe Cassiau-Haurie, Fayçal Chehat, Soeuf Elbadawi, Boniface Mongo-Mboussa, etc. The magazine is managed by the association Africultures and it is published by L'Harmattan. Since 2012 the documentation produced by the magazine and its database made of over 45,000 biographies of artists and 55,000 description of books, music, films and institutions has been released under the open Creative Commons attribution share alike license. Seydou Barry (1943 – 2007) was a Senegalese painter. He is part of the artistic movement called the Dakar School (), affiliated with ''Négritude ''Négritude'' (from French "nègre" and "-itude" to denote a condition that can be translated as "Blackness") is a framework of critique and literary theory, mainly developed by francophone intellectuals, writers, and politicians in the Africa ...''. Biography Seydou Barry was born in 1943, in Thilogne in the Matam Region of Senegal. He attended the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Dakar to study painting, and worked under artist Papa Ibra Tall. In 1963, Barry started exhibiting his own paintings. Barry worked at the National Tapestry Manufacturers in Thiès () as a painter and cartoonist, from 1961 to 1965.
