Paonia
Paonia is a statutory town in Delta County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. History The area was first explored in 1853 by Captain John W. Gunnison of the United States Army. Gunnison was on an expedition for the Corps of Topographical Engineers to locate a suitable pass through the Rocky Mountains. The North Fork Valley was inhabited by the Ute people until 1880, when the Ute Indian Reservation was closed by the federal government following the infamous Meeker Massacre. Following the closure of the reservation, the site was settled in 1880 by Samuel Wade and William Clark, who had accompanied Enos Hotchkiss to the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1902 and had its first election in July of that year. The peony roots that Samuel Wade brought with him to Colorado in 1881 inspired him to submit the Latin name for peony, ''Paeonia'', as a town name. Mount Lamborn
Mount Lamborn is a mountain summit in the West Elk Mountains range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The peak is located in Gunnison National Forest, southeast by south (bearing 141°) of the Town of Paonia in Delta County, Colorado, United States. The summit of Mount Lamborn is the highest point in Delta County. Hotchkiss is a statutory town in Delta County, Colorado, United States. The population was 944 at the 2010 census. A post office called Hotchkiss has been in operation since 1882. The town is named after Enos T. Hotchkiss, a local pioneer. Geography Hotchkiss is located in eastern Delta County at (38.799275, -107.716976), on the north side of the North Fork Gunnison River. Colorado State Highway 133
State Highway 133 (SH 133) is a long north–south byway connecting SH 92 to the south and SH 82 to the north, and travels through the towns of Hotchkiss, Somerset, Redstone, and Carbondale. Highway 133 travels over a significant mountain pass on the northern end, called McClure Pass, which is above sea level. The road travels right next to the Crystal River, known for whitewater river running. History The route was established in the 1920s, when SH 133 began at SH 135 in Bardine and ended at Carbondale. SH 133 was then reroutes from SH 135 at Crested Butte to Carbondale by 1936. The route's south terminus was adjusted back to Bardine in 1939, and a small gap at McClure pass was opened. By 1954, a large section of the route was deleted, leaving only a four-mile (6 km) road near Carbondale. The route was gradually expanded through the late 1950s and early 1960s. The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus ''Paeonia'' , the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae . Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists differ on the number of species that can be distinguished, ranging from 25 to 40, although the current consensus is 33 known species. The relationships between the species need to be further clarified. Most are herbaceous perennial plants tall, but some are woody shrubs tall.
