Pantayo
Pantayo is a Canadian quintet consisting of queer members of the Filipino diaspora formed in 2012. They combines elements of kulintang with elements of electronic, synth-pop, punk, and R&B music. Their name is Tagalog for "for us". The band consists of vocalist, bassist, and keyboardist Eirene Cloma; vocalist and agung player Michelle Cruz; vocalist, gandingan player, and sarunay player Joanna Delos Reyes; vocalist, kulintang and dabakan player Kat Estacio; and vocalist, kulintang player, and sarunay player Katrina Estacio. They were named as one of NOW Magazine's Toronto Indie Musicians to Watch in 2018. Pantayo (album)
''Pantayo'' is the debut album by Toronto-based kulintang quintet Pantayo, released on May 8, 2020, on Toronto label Telephone Explosion. It was produced by alaska B of Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. The album was one of ten nominated for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Style ''Pantayo'' combines the kulintang music of the South Philippines with "western" genres such as synth-pop, hip-hop, R&B, trip hop, and punk. There is large diversity between the musical styles showcased on ''Pantayo''. "Heto Na" (Tagalog for "here we go") was inspired by the Original Pilipino Music scene of the 1970s. "V V V (They Lie)" has a composition that the band compared to bubble tea. "Taranta" (whose name, according to Kat Estacio, “means to panic or to feel frantic, as a mindless response") features a rap-like vocal track, while "Bahala Na" (Tagalog for "it's up to you") more relaxed, being compared to lovers rock. 2020 Polaris Music Prize
The 2020 edition of the Canadian Polaris Music Prize was presented on October 19, 2020. The longlist was announced on June 15, 2020, with the shortlist following on July 15, 2020 and the winner announced on October 19, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional winner's gala did not take place this year, and instead a special cinematic tribute to the shortlist was streamed online by CBC Music and CBC Gem, following which the winner was announced. The award was won by Backxwash for the album ''God Has Nothing to Do With This Leave Him Out of It''. The livestreamed presentation received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Live Production for Social Media at the 9th Canadian Screen Awards. Dabakan

Philippine drum, primarily used as a supportive instrument in the kulintang ensemble. Among the five main kulintang instruments, it is the only non-gong element of the Maguindanao ensemble. Description The dabakan is frequently described as either hour-glass, conical, tubular, or goblet in shape. Normally, the dabakan is found having a length of more than two feet and a diameter of more than a foot about the widest part of the shell. The shell is carved from wood either out of the trunk of a coconut tree or the wood of a jackfruit tree which is then hollowed out throughout its body and stem. Kulintang
Kulintang ( id, kolintang, ms, kulintangan) is a modern term for an ancient instrumental form of music composed on a row of small, horizontally laid gongs that function melodically, accompanied by larger, suspended gongs and drums. As part of the larger gong-chime culture of Southeast Asia, kulintang music ensembles have been playing for many centuries in regions of the Eastern Indonesia, Southern Philippines, Eastern Malaysia, Brunei and Timor, Kulintang evolved from a simple native signaling tradition, and developed into its present form with the incorporation of knobbed gongs from Sundanese people in Java Island, Indonesia. Its importance stems from its association with the indigenous cultures that inhabited these islands prior to the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity or the West, making Kulintang the most developed tradition of Southeast Asian archaic gong-chime ensembles. Gandingan
The gandingan is a Philippine set of four large, hanging gongs used by the Maguindanao as part of their kulintang ensemble. When integrated into the ensemble, it functions as a secondary melodic instrument after the main melodic instrument, the kulintang. When played solo, the gandingan allows fellow Maguindanao to communicate with each other, allowing them to send messages or warnings via long distances. This ability to imitate tones of the Maguindanao language using this instrument has given the gandingan connotation: the “talking gongs.” Description The instrument is usually described as four, large, shallow-bossed, thin-rimmed gongs, vertically hung, either from a strong support such as a tree limb or housed in a strong wooden framed stand.
