Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN (''Polish Scientific Publishers PWN''; until 1991 ''Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe'' - ''National Scientific Publishers PWN'', PWN) is a Polish book publisher, founded in 1951, when it split from the Wydawnictwa Szkolne i Pedagogiczne. Adam Bromberg, who was the enterprise's director between 1953 and 1965, made it into communist Poland's largest publishing house. The printing house is best known as a publisher of encyclopedias, dictionaries and university handbooks. It is the leading Polish provider of scientific, educational and professional literature as well as works of reference. It authored the Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN, by then the largest Polish encyclopedia, as well as its successor, the Wielka Encyklopedia PWN, which was published between 2001 and 2005. Adam Bromberg
Adam Bromberg (12 March 1912 at Lublin, then Russian Empire – 23 March 1993 at Stockholm, Sweden) was a Polish publisher. He studied foreign trade in Vienna, and was a member of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine. In 1934, he was arrested and sentenced to 3.5 years of political prison. From 1939 to 1941, he worked as an editor in Lviv. He became a soldier of the Soviet Army in 1941, and a soldier of the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division in 1943. He was named deputy director of "Książka" Editors in 1946 and Director of the State Scientific Publishers in 1953. In 1968, he was arrested in the Polish political crisis because of his Jewish descent. In 1969, he emigrated to Sweden, where he edited translations of Polish literature. In 1975, he founded the Swedish publishing company Brombergs förlag together with his daughter Dorotea Bromberg. Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN
The ''Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN'' (Great Universal Encyclopedia PWN) was, until 2005, the largest Polish encyclopedia ever written. It was published between 1962 and 1970 by Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (State Scientific Publishers, PWN) in Warsaw. The ''WEP'' contains about 82,000 entries, 12,000 illustrations, 200 color and 650 black-and-white inserted illustrations, and 120 color maps in thirteen volumes (including the Supplement). Many entries are signed, and many contain bibliographic material. The encyclopedia shows severe censorship. As is stated in the foreword, the encyclopedia is "based on rationalist and materialist assumptions" and reflects the worldview of the "socialist ideology".
