Panshet
Panshet Dam, also called Tanajisagar Dam, is a dam on the Ambi river, a tributary of the Mutha River, about southwest of the city of Pune in western India. The dam was constructed in late 1950s for irrigation and, along with three other dams nearby, Varasgaon, Temghar and Khadakwasla, it supplies drinking water to Pune. History The Panshet Dam burst on 12 July 1961, during its first year of storing water. The failure occurred when the dam wall gave way due to the complete lack of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) reinforcement in the conduit passing through the earthen structure. Instead of using RCC, plain unreinforced concrete blocks were installed, owing to a shortage of steel at the time. This critical design compromise led to a catastrophic failure, resulting in massive flooding in Pune and an estimated death toll of around 1,000 people. Khadakwasla Dam
Khadakwasla Dam is a dam on the Mutha River from the centre of the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India. The dam created a reservoir known as Khadakwasla Lake which is the main source of water for Pune and its suburbs. In the vicinity of Khadakwasla Dam is the National Defence Academy (NDA), the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), the College of Military Engineering, Pune (CME, Dapodi) and Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS). A few kilometres to the south lies Sinhagad Fort; the twin dams of Panshet and Varasgaon, which mainly supply water for irrigation but also feed into Khadakwasla Lake, lie just due west of the backwaters of Khadakwasla Lake. Mutha River
The Mutha River is a river in western Maharashtra, India. It arises in the Western Ghats and flows eastward until it merges with the Mula River (India), Mula River in the city of Pune. It has been dammed twice, first at the Panshet Dam (on the Ambi River), used as a source of drinking water and irrigation for Pune city. The water released here is dammed again at Khadakwasla and is an important source of drinking water for Pune. One more dam has been built later on the Mutha river at Temghar. After merging with the Mula River in Pune, the Mutha flows on as the Mula-Mutha River to join the Bhima River.
