Pangue Reservoir
Pangue Hydroelectric Plant is a hydroelectric power station in Bío Bío Region, Chile. It lies west of Callaqui volcano at the confluence of the rivers Pangue and Huiri-Huiri. The plant uses water from the upper Bío Bío River and produces of electricity. The plant was built by Endesa in 1996. Technical features The penstock delivering water to the power plant has a hydraulic head of and a design volume of . Pangue contributes 10% of the electricity fed into the Chilean integrated grid, making it the third largest power station after Ralco () and Pehuenche (). The dam is made of roller-compacted concrete, using about a million cubic meter of concrete. The dam and power plant were built from 1993 to 1996. Behind the dam lies a reservoir of , long and wide. This makes it one of the most efficient large hydropower plants in the world, as measured by the relation between electricity production and area flooded. Callaqui
Callaqui is a stratovolcano located in the Bío Bío Region of Chile. It is a large ice-capped, basaltic andesite volcano which is elongated in the northeast-southwest direction, due to its construction along an long fissure. Numerous cinder cones and lava flows have erupted from vents along this linear fissure. Most of the activity at Callaqui has been fumarolic. Minor eruptions were reported 1751, 1864, and 1937, and the latest eruption was a small phreatic eruption in 1980. Together with Hekla in Iceland, Callaqui is one of the few volcanoes with a morphology between a crater row and stratovolcano (built from mixed lava and tephra eruptions). The volcano is the centerpiece of Ralco National Reserve. Roller-compacted Concrete
Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) or rolled concrete (rollcrete) is a special blend of concrete that has essentially the same ingredients as conventional concrete but in different ratios, and increasingly with partial substitution of fly ash for portland cement. The partial substitution of fly ash for Portland Cement is an important aspect of RCC dam construction because the heat generated by fly ash hydration is significantly less than the heat generated by portland cement hydration. This in turn reduces the thermal loads on the concrete and reduces the potential for thermal cracking to occur. Pehuenche
Pehuenche (or Pewenche) are an Indigenous people of South America. They live in the Andes, primarily in present-day south central Chile and adjacent Argentina. Their name derives from their dependence for food on the seeds of the ''Araucaria araucana'' or monkey-puzzle tree ( in Mapudungun). In the 16th century, the Pehuenche lived in the mountainous territory from approximately 34 degrees to 40 degrees south.
