Pangavini Island
Pangavini Island (or simply Pangavini) is an uninhabited Tanzanian island in the Zanzibar Channel, about 1.5 km off the mainland, north of the country's capital city, Dar es Salaam and is one of the nine islands of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System (DMRS). The island is small, only about 250 m long; it has a rocky coastline without beaches. Pangavini Island is an important breeding, resting and feeding site to a variety of rats, birds and reptiles (snakes and lizards). There is also an assortment of insects including butterflies. Zanzibar Channel
The Zanzibar Channel is a strait in south-eastern Africa, separating the island of Unguja (also known as Zanzibar) from mainland Tanzania. The channel is 120 km long and 29–37 km wide, with depth varying from a few dozen metres (in the centre) to a few hundred metres to the north and to the south. Dar Es Salaam Marine Reserve
The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System (DMRS) is a group of marine wildlife reserves in Tanzania, situated off the coast of Dar es Salaam Region. The reserve system consists of nine uninhabited islands, four north of Dar es Salaam (Bongoyo, Mbudya, Pangavini and Fungu Yasini) and five south of the city ( Inner and Outer Makatumbe, Inner and Outer Sinda and Kendwa Island). It provides protection for several important tropical ecosystems; coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. The Marine Park and Reserves Unit of Tanzania was formed in 1994 under the Marine Parks and Reserve Act No 29, of 1994. Previously all marine life and biodiversity was under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.
