Pandoras
The Pandoras were an American all-female garage punk band from Los Angeles, California, active from 1982 to 1991. The band is among the first handful of all-female rock bands to ever be signed to a major label. From the beginning, the band found a strong following in the Hollywood garage rock and Paisley Underground scene, making the gossip pages almost weekly. The Pandoras enjoyed strong radio support from DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. The band graduated from the garage rock sound to a more contemporary, hard rock style in later years, spawning the off-shoot band the Muffs. The Pandoras founder/singer/guitarist/songwriter, Paula Pierce, died of a brain aneurysm on August 10, 1991, at the age of 31. The Muffs frontwoman and founder Kim Shattuck, who played bass in the Pandoras from 1985 to 1990, appeared as lead singer and guitarist of the reunited Pandoras until she died of complications from ALS on October 2, 2019, aged 56. ''Stop Pretending'' is a studio album by the American garage punk band the Pandoras, released in 1986 by Rhino Records. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' wrote: "While maintaining the ’60s fixation and playing up the brash-hussy stance, ''Stop Pretending'' features stronger playing and a harder-rocking edge (there’s no reason why 'In and Out of My Life (In a Day)' shouldn’t have been a hit), suggesting that the Pandoras aren’t as hopelessly mired in historical fetishism as one might assume." Kim Shattuck
Kimberly Dianne Shattuck (July 17, 1963 – October 2, 2019) was an American singer, musician, and songwriter. She was the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the American punk rock band the Muffs, which formed in 1991. From 1985 to 1990, Shattuck was a member of the Pandoras. In 2001, she was a singer, guitarist and songwriter for the Beards, a side project composed of Shattuck, Lisa Marr, and Sherri Solinger. In 2013, she was the bass player for Pixies (band), Pixies. ''It's About Time'' is the debut studio album by American garage punk band the Pandoras and was released in 1984 by the Voxx record label. Reception In a retrospective review for the AllMusic website, critic Dean Carlson described the album as one that "shines in its muddily produced, tonally confident swagger" and "avoids the sputter of careerist garage rock for a spectacularly bleary haunted house feel." Carlson summed up by calling the album, "one of 1984's best garage-punk releases." Garage rock (sometimes called garage punk or 60s punk) is a raw and energetic style of rock music that flourished in the mid-1960s, most notably in the United States and Canada, and has experienced a series of subsequent revivals. ''The Enigma Variations'' is a compilation album of newer artists (in 1985) that were on Enigma Records or one of its subsidiaries. It was originally released as a double LP and cassette, but was then subsequently also released as a CD with a reduced number of tracks. The album was compiled by Steve Pross and William Hein. Rodney Bingenheimer
Rodney Bingenheimer (born December 15, 1946) is an American radio disc jockey who is best known as the host of ''Rodney on the ROQ'', a radio program that ran on the Los Angeles rock station KROQ-FM from 1976 to 2017. In the early 1970s, he also managed a Los Angeles nightclub called Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco. Bingenheimer helped numerous bands become successful in the American market. Restless Records
Restless Records was started in El Segundo, California in 1986 by Enigma Records and primarily released alternative, metal and punk records. Restless also licensed and released records from Bar/None Records, Metal Blade Records and Mute Records. And Restless had a fully owned subsidiary Pink Dust Records. In 1991 Restless and a number of Enigma Records titles were acquired by Bill Hein and Joe Regis and re-launched in Hollywood, California.
