Poison Ivy is a character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Carmine Infantino, she debuted in ''Batman (comic book), Batman'' #181 (June 1966) and has become one of the superhero Batman's most enduring enemies belonging to the collective of adversaries that make up his List of Batman Family adversaries#Classic rogues gallery, rogues gallery. In her comic book appearances, Poison Ivy is depicted as a doctor of botany-turned-Misanthropy, misanthropic Eco-terrorism, ecoterrorist in Gotham City named Pamela Lillian Isley, PhD ( ) with the ability to control all plant life. Empowered by an elemental force known as the "Green", Ivy attempts to protect the sanctity and supremacy of nature at all costs by lashing out against humanity, which brings her into conflict with Batman. ''Batman'' is an ongoing American comic book series featuring the DC Comics superhero Batman as its protagonist. The character, created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, first appeared in ''Detective Comics'' #27 (cover dated May 1939). Batman proved to be so popular that a self-titled ongoing comic book series began publication with a cover date of spring 1940. It was first advertised in early April 1940, one month after the first appearance of his new sidekick, Robin (character), Robin the Boy Wonder. Batman comics have proven to be popular since the 1940s. Though the ''Batman'' comic book was launched as a quarterly publication, it later became a bimonthly series through the late 1950s, after which it became a monthly publication. In September 2011, ''The New 52'' rebooted DC's continuity.
