Palermo Metropolitan Railway Service
The Palermo metropolitan railway service is a commuter rail system operated by Trenitalia. It serves the city of Palermo in Sicily, Italy. Lines There are two lines: * Palermo Centrale Punta Raisi (airport) * Palermo Notarbartolo Giachery Both lines are served by a train every 30 minutes, although on the Palermo CentralePunta Raisi line some stops are served by half of the trains. History The first section of the Palermo "metropolitana" was opened in 1990, a month before the beginning of Italia 90, the football World Cup. The line had only six stations: Palermo Centrale, Vespri, Palermo Notarbartolo, Federico, Fiera and Giachery. The line used the tracks of the old PalermoTrapani railway, running across the city until Notarbartolo station, and from there it followed the branch to the port, along which new stops were built. Palermo Aeroporto railway station (), formerly known as ''Punta Raisi railway station'', is located within Palermo Airport () (IATA code: PMO) in Cinisi, near Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Opened in 2004, the station is the northwestern terminus of the Palermo Passante railway, and forms part of the Palermo Metro. The station is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). Palermo Rail Ring
The ''Palermo Rail Ring'' is a railway line under construction in Sicily, Italy. It is expected to open in 2021 or 2022 and will extend from Palermo Notarbartolo railway station to Giachery station. History The two main aims of the project are to improve commuter traffic in and around Palermo and also to reduce urban congestion in the city. Another objective is to improve the sustainable mobility of the area. During the construction period, about 750 new jobs are expected to be created. Route The eventual planned route is to be an underground circular single track railway with a length of about 6.5 km, and is due for completion in 2018. Falcone Borsellino Airport () or simply Palermo Airport, formerly Punta Raisi Airport, is an international airport located at Cinisi, west-northwest of Palermo, the capital city of the Italian island of Sicily. It is the second biggest airport in Sicily in terms of passengers after Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, with 7,118,087 passengers handled in 2022. History The airport was given the name ''Falcone Borsellino'' in memory of the two leading anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino who were murdered by the Sicilian Mafia in 1992. The ALn 668 (''Automotrice Leggera a nafta'', Light Diesel motor car) series is a family of diesel railcars built by Fiat Ferroviaria between the 1950s and the 1980s. The trains were built for the Italian public railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), now Trenitalia as well as many Italian private railway operators. Types derived from the class have been built for the railway companies of other nations. Most of the trains are still in service today. The forty units of the 2400 series were built entirely by Breda in Milan. The ALn 668 is considered the standard railcar of the FS. Class ALn 663 is quite similar, while maintaining the same mechanics, received a different classification exclusively for the new interior design that reduced the number from sixty-eight to sixty-three. The term "railcar" is usually used in reference to a train consisting of a single coach (or carriage, car, unit), with a driver's cab at one or both ends.
