Palermo Metropolitan Railway Service
The Palermo metropolitan railway service is a commuter rail system operated by Trenitalia. It serves the city of Palermo in Sicily, Italy. Lines There are two lines: * Palermo CentralePunta Raisi (airport) * Palermo Notarbartolo Giachery Both lines are served by a train every 30 minutes, although on the Palermo CentralePunta Raisi line some stops are served by half of the trains. History The first section of the Palermo "metropolitana" was opened in 1990, a month before the beginning of Italia 90, the football World Cup. The line had only six stations: Palermo Centrale, Vespri, Palermo Notarbartolo, Federico, Fiera and Giachery. The line used the tracks of the old PalermoTrapani railway, running across the city until Notarbartolo station, and from there it followed the branch to the port, along which new stops were built. Punta Raisi Railway Station
Punta Raisi railway station ( it, Stazione di Punta Raisi), is located within Palermo Airport ( it, Aeroporto di Palermo "Falcone e Borsellino") (IATA code: PMO) in Cinisi, near Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Opened in 2004, the station is the northwestern terminus of the Palermo Passante railway, and forms part of the Palermo Metro. The station is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). Train services are operated by Trenitalia. Both companies are subsidiaries of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned rail company. Location Punta Raisi railway station is situated underground, directly opposite the airport terminal, and is accessible through the terminal. Palermo Rail Ring
The ''Palermo Rail Ring'' is a railway line under construction in Sicily, Italy. It is expected to open in 2021 or 2022 and will extend from Palermo Notarbartolo railway station to Giachery station. History The two main aims of the project are to improve commuter traffic in and around Palermo and also to reduce urban congestion in the city. Another objective is to improve the sustainable mobility of the area. During the construction period, about 750 new jobs are expected to be created. Route The eventual planned route is to be an underground circular single track railway with a length of about 6.5 km, and is due for completion in 2018. The ALn 668 (''Automotrice Leggera a nafta'', Light Diesel motor car) series is a family of diesel railcars built by Fiat Ferroviaria between the 1950s and the 1980s. The trains were built for the Italian public railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), now Trenitalia as well as many Italian private railway operators. Types derived from the class have been built for the railway companies of other nations. Most of the trains are still in service today. The forty units of the 2400 series were built entirely by Breda in Milan. The ALn 668 is considered the standard railcar of the FS. A railcar (not to be confused with a railway car) is a self-propelled railway vehicle designed to transport passengers. The term "railcar" is usually used in reference to a train consisting of a single coach (carriage, car), with a driver's cab at one or both ends. Some railway companies, such as the Great Western, termed such vehicles "railmotors" (or "rail motors"). Self-propelled passenger vehicles also capable of hauling a train are, in technical rail usage, more usually called "rail motor coaches" or "motor cars" (not to be confused with the motor cars, otherwise known as automobiles, that operate on roads).
