Pale Saints
Pale Saints were an English alternative rock and shoegaze band formed in 1987 in Leeds by singer-bassist Ian Masters, guitarist Graeme Naysmith and drummer Chris Cooper.Strong, Martin C. By the time they recorded their first EP, ''Barging Into the Presence of God'', released in 1989, the band went into a direction that displayed a mix of Ian Masters' ethereal, choirboy-like vocals along with dark atmospheric and noisy pop tunes. Ashley Horner from Edsel Auctioneer briefly joined the band on guitar in the same year. The band was signed to 4AD Records after their first London show by the label's chief Ivo Watts-Russell. Leeds
Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It is the largest settlement in Yorkshire and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough, which is the second most populous district in the United Kingdom. ''The Comforts of Madness'' is the debut studio album by English alternative rock band Pale Saints. It was released on 12 February 1990 by 4AD. ''The Comforts of Madness'' peaked at number 40 on the UK Albums Chart. On 17 January 2020, 4AD released a remastered and expanded reissue of the album for its 30th anniversary. Critical reception Reviewing ''The Comforts of Madness'' for ''NME'', Simon Williams praised the album as an "unnervingly multi-dimensional collage of melody and friction" with "at least eight Great Pop Tunes, all hooklines and absolutely no stinkers." The magazine later named it the 45th best album of 1990. In 2016, ''Pitchfork'' ranked ''The Comforts of Madness'' at number 21 on its list of the 50 best shoegaze albums of all time. "Jersey Girl" is a song composed and originally sung by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits from his 1980 album ''Heartattack and Vine''. Waits original Waits wrote the song for his future wife Kathleen Brennan, who had been living in New Jersey. Waits said in a 1980 interview that, "I never thought I would catch myself saying 'sha la la' in a song ... This is my first experiment with 'sha la la.'" Waits' recording includes drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and glockenspiel, in an arrangement that captures the feeling of the seashore by way of "Under the Boardwalk" or "Spanish Harlem". Hugh Jones is a British record producer with many important post-punk, new wave and alternative rock albums to his credit. Career In the early 1970s, Jones worked as an apprentice engineer in IBC Studios in Central London, while acting as lead singer in the band Mistral. Nancy Sandra Sinatra (born June 8, 1940) is an American singer, actress, film producer and author. She is the elder daughter of Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra ( Barbato) and is known for her 1965 signature hit " These Boots Are Made for Walkin'. Nancy Sinatra began her career as a singer in November 1957 with an appearance on her father's ABC television variety series '' The Frank Sinatra Show'' but initially achieved success only in Europe and Japan. Opal (band)
Opal was an American rock band in the 1980s. They were part of the Paisley Underground musical style. The band's name is derived from "Opel", a song by Syd Barrett. The group formed in the mid-1980s under the name Clay Allison, featuring guitarist David Roback (previously of Rain Parade), bassist Kendra Smith (from Dream Syndicate) and drummer Keith Mitchell. After one single, they released the remaining Clay Allison tracks under the band's new name, Opal, on the 1984 ''Fell from the Sun EP''. Another EP, ''Northern Line'', followed in 1985. These EPs were later compiled and released as ''Early Recordings''. '' Happy Nightmare Baby'', Opal's first full-length album, was released in 1987.
