Palatka Station
Palatka station is an Amtrak train station in Palatka, Florida. It is served by the daily and trains. The 1908-built station houses the Palatka Railroad Preservation Society and the David Browning Railroad Museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 as Old A.C.L. Union Depot. History The station was built in 1908 for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) and was constructed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It served as a union depot for the ACL's Jacksonville-Tampa-Sarasota mainline as well as for the Florida Southern Railway and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway. In addition to local service to Sarasota, the station served the ACL's ''West Coast Champion'' (New York City – Sarasota). Until 1936, the station also served passenger trains operated by the Florida East Coast Railway, whose trains crossed the St. Johns river over a railway bridge in Palatka. Palatka () is a city in and the county seat of Putnam County, Florida, Putnam County, Florida, United States. Palatka is the principal city of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to 72,893 residents. The Palatka micropolitan area is included in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, Jacksonville—Kingsland–Palatka, FL-GA Combined Statistical Area. The city is the location of the St. Johns River State College, St. Johns River Water Management District Headquarters, and Ravine Gardens State Park. Florida East Coast Railway
The Florida East Coast Railway is a Class II railroad operating in the U.S. state of Florida, currently owned by Grupo México. Built primarily in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, the FEC was a project of Standard Oil principal Henry Flagler. He originally visited Florida with his first wife, Mary; they sought assistance with the health issues she faced. A key strategist who worked closely with John D. Rockefeller building the Standard Oil Trust, Flagler noted both great potential and a lack of services during his stay at St. Augustine.
