The Residence Silveira e Paulo () is located on ''Rua da Conceição'', in the civil parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Completed in the style of the late 19th century, the residence is one of the more notable examples of Azorean civil construction in the transition between 19th and 20th centuries. History In the 19th century, Domingos Machado da Silveira e Paulo, from a modest family of quarrymen and agricultural farmers raised in Santo Amaro on the island of Pico, departed for São Tomé, where he worked in the roça ''Colónia Açoriana''. Domingos took his extended family, that included four siblings, who formed an important society, involved in the international cocoa market. Angra do Heroísmo (), or simply Angra, is a city and municipality on Terceira Island, Portugal, and one of the three capital cities of the Azores. Pico Island (''Ilha do Pico,'' ) is an island in the Central Group, Azores, Central Group of the Portugal, Portuguese Azores. São Tomé is the capital and largest city of the Central African island country of São Tomé and Príncipe. Its name is Portuguese for " Saint Thomas". Founded in the 15th century, it is one of Africa's oldest colonial cities. History Álvaro Caminha founded the colony of São Tomé in 1493. 1980 Azores Earthquake
Striking the Autonomous Region of the Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 73 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge. Resulting from a strike slip fracture, typical of other historical Azorean earthquakes, and measuring 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale, it also shook the islands of Pico and Faial.
