Palace Hotel, Helsinki
The Palace Hotel is an historic modernist hotel in Helsinki, opened in 1952, the year of the Helsinki Olympic Games. The building was designed by architects Viljo Revell and Keijo Petäjä, and was constructed during 1949–1952. In addition to the Palace Hotel and related restaurants, the building hosted also the main offices of the Confederation of Finnish Industry and Employers. The interiors of the building were furnished by various renowned Finnish interior designers, such as Olli Borg, Antti Nurmesniemi and Olavi Hänninen. The hotel building has been included in the selection of Finnish masterpieces of modernism in architecture by the Docomomo International organization. The 1952 Summer Olympics (, ), officially known as the Games of the XV Olympiad (, ) and commonly known as Helsinki 1952, were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1952 in Helsinki, Finland. Viljo Revell
Viljo Gabriel Revell (25 January 1910 – 8 November 1964) was a Finnish architect of the functionalist school. In Finland he is best known for the design of the Lasipalatsi ("Glass Palace") and Palace Hotel, both in Helsinki. Internationally, Revell is best known for designing the New City Hall of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Life and career Revell, originally spelt ''Rewell'', was born in Vaasa in 1910, and graduated from Vaasan Lyseo in 1928. He graduated as an architect from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1937. He made his architectural breakthrough already the year he graduated when he, together with fellow students Heimo Riihimäki and Niilo Kokko, won the architectural competition for the design of the Lasipalatsi, which had originally been intended as a temporary building comprising shops, restaurant and cinema, but which became one of the landmarks of Finnish "white functionalist" architecture. Antti Nurmesniemi
Antti Aarre Nurmesniemi (30 August 1927 in Hämeenlinna – 11 September 2003 in Helsinki) was a Finnish designer. He is perhaps best known for his coffee pots and his interior design work. Biography Antti Nurmesniemi's work includes enamel coffee pots and furniture such as the Jakkara sauna stool, as well as interior design work. He has been referred to as the "Grand Old Man of Finnish Design", and he won the Lunning Prize in 1959. He was married to textile designer Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, known for her striped designs for Marimekko. Nurmesniemi was involved in the modernist design of the Palace Hotel from 1951–1953. with Olli Borg and Olavi Hänninen. He also designed the interior of the Finnish State Guesthouse. Olavi Hänninen
Olavi Tapio Hänninen (14 December 1920, in Lapinlahti – 16 June 1992 in Espoo) was a Finnish designer and interior architect. Olavi Hänninen's design projects ranged from furniture to trams and church silverware, including total interior designs for many public facilities. His modernist designs also included tables and chairs, and he was well recognized for his work on the Palace Hotel interiors together with Antti Nurmesniemi and Olli Borg. Hänninen designed a renowned plastic chair with metal structure for the hotel's café. In the 1970s, his designs included the new Valmet Nr I trams for Helsinki City Transport. Hotel Kämp
Hotel Kämp () is a historic hotel in Kluuvi, Helsinki, Finland. It is a member of Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel, originally built in 1887 by Carl Kämp, was designed by Theodor Höijer. The building was demolished and the facade was rebuilt in 1965. The headquarters of the bank Kansallis-Osake-Pankki (now part of Nordea) were situated in the building for almost three decades, until 1995. A major restoration project, started in 1996, culminated in the reopening of Hotel Kämp in 1999 as part of The Luxury Collection. A shopping centre, , was also opened within the same city block. Another major renovation will begin in Q4 2023, to be finished by the end of 2025; the hotel will remain operational throughout this period. Hotel Marski (or Marski by Scandic) is a hotel opened 1962 on Mannerheimintie 10 in Helsinki, Finland. The hotel was built by Alko-owned Arctia Oy and the nine-storey building with strip windows was designed in 1961 by architect Einari Teräsvirta.
