''Painted Faces'' is a 1929 American Pre-Code mystery film directed by Albert S. Rogell and starring Joe E. Brown, Helen Foster (actress), Helen Foster and Barton Hepburn.Babington & Charles Barr p.53 The film's sets were designed by the art director Hervey Libbert. Synopsis After a vaudeville performer is murdered, another member of the troupe is arrested. Mabel Julienne Scott (November 2, 1892 – October 1, 1976) was an American stage and silent movie actress. Biography Scott was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Joseph and Martie Scott, of French and Norwegian heritage. A graduate of Northwestern Conservatory in Minneapolis, she also attended Stanley Girls' College. She came to New York City at the age of 17. When she failed to land the job she wanted, Scott played for a time with a stock company in Omaha, Nebraska. Scott made her Broadway (Manhattan) stage debut in ''The Barrier'' by Rex Beach. Purnell Pratt (October 20, 1885 – July 25, 1941) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 110 films between 1914 and 1941. He was born in Bethel, Illinois and died in Hollywood, California. Pratt spent more than a year in France in the U. S. military during World War I. He attended the University of Pennsylvania with plans to perform in opera. However, lacking funds and unable to obtain a hearing, he joined the chorus of a George M. Cohan production. Richard Whitlock Tucker (June 4, 1884 – December 5, 1942) was an American actor. Tucker was born in Brooklyn, New York. Appearing in more than 260 films between 1911 and 1940, he was the first official member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and a founding member of SAG's Board of Directors. Tucker died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles from a heart attack. He is interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in an unmarked niche in Great Mausoleum, Columbarium of Faith. Lester Cole (June 19, 1904 – August 15, 1985) was an American screenwriter. He was one of the Hollywood Ten, a group of screenwriters and directors who were cited for contempt of Congress and blacklisted for their refusal to testify regarding their alleged involvement with the Communist Party. Biography Born into a Jewish family in New York City, Cole was the son of Polish immigrants. His father was a Marxist garment industry union organiser, and Lester developed his socialist ideology at a young age. He began his career as an actor but soon turned to screenwriting. His first work was ''If I Had a Million''. In 1933, he teamed with John Howard Lawson and Samuel Ornitz to establish the Screen Writers Guild, and in 1934 he joined the Communist Party (CPUSA).
