Painesdale is an unincorporated community in Houghton County, Michigan, United States. Painesdale is located in Adams Township along M-26, southwest of South Range. Painesdale has a post office with ZIP code 49955. History Painesdale was built by the Champion Mining Company between 1899 and 1917, and named after the Boston businessman William A. Paine, who was associated with many mines as well as the Paine Webber brokerage. Painesdale was located near the copper load, and the company designed the town following theories of efficient planning. Champion Mining Company
The Champion Mining Company was created in 1899 to manage the Champion Mine located in the heart of copper country in Painesdale, Michigan, United States. The Champion Mine in Painesdale was closed in 1967. The Champion #4 Shaft-Rock house is the oldest shaft-rock house standing in the Keweenaw. Champion #4 was one of the many Copper Range Company mines that ran from Atlantic Mine to Painesdale. During the 1930s the mine was working the 48th level, 4,800 feet from the surface on the incline at the #4 shaft house. Some buildings and many ruins remain from this once active mine. Although primarily a copper mine, the Champion Mine also contained prehnite and chalcocite Chalcocite (), copper(I) sulfide (Cu2S), is an important copper ore mineral. Seeberville Murders
The Seeberville Murders, also less commonly referred to as the Seeberville Affair or the Seeberville Massacre, was a homicide, which resulted in the deaths of striking miners Steven "Steve" Putrich and Alois "Louis" Tijan on August 14, 1913. Putrich and Tijan were killed by a group of strikebreakers in Seeberville, Michigan, a suburb of Painesdale. The murders took place during the bitter Copper Country strike of 1913–14, one of the United States' most violent labor strike. Putrich and Tijan are considered among the first real casualties of the strike. The deaths were especially significant considering that a local doctor classified the death of Steven Putrich as homicide. South Range is a village in Adams Township, Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is bordered on the east by the unincorporated community of Baltic. It is about five miles southwest of Houghton on M-26. The population was 758 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code for South Range is 49963. It is a "cooperating community of the Keweenaw National Historical Park." History South Range was platted in 1902 by the Wheal Kate Mining Company, which operated an unsuccessful copper mine nearby.
