Pagoda (band)
Pagoda was an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Its last known lineup before the breakup in 2011 included Michael Pitt as vocalist and guitarist, Reece Carr on drums, Willie Paredes on bass, and Chris Hoffman on cello. Their first self-titled album was released on February 27, 2007 through Ecstatic Peace. They began recording their sophomore release in March 2009 at Excello Recording Studios in Brooklyn, New York, with producer Hugh Pool. In October 2009, they released their second career single, "Warzone", on their official Myspace page. History Pagoda began as a musical concept of lead singer and guitarist Michael Pitt. While working on Gus Van Sant's 2005 film ''Last Days'', Pitt was introduced to Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who signed on to the film as a musical advisor. Thurston Moore
Thurston Joseph Moore (born July 25, 1958) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter best known as a member of the rock band Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. ''Pagoda'' is the debut album by Pagoda. It was recorded in Milan, and was released in 2007. Following the completion of the album, band members Jamie and Indigo left the band. Luca stepped in to play bass, but has since taken the role as sound man for the 2007 European tour, and will remain Pagoda's producer. In January 2006, the band launched a tour in support of the album, which was released by Ecstatic Peace!. Sintir
The sintir (), also known as the guembri (), gimbri, hejhouj in Hausa language, is a three stringed skin-covered bass plucked lute used by the Gnawa people of Morocco. It is approximately the size of a guitar, with a body carved from a log and covered on the playing side with camel skin. The camel skin has the same acoustic function as the membrane on a banjo. The neck is a simple stick with one short and two long goat strings that produce a percussive sound similar to a pizzicato cello or double bass. The goat gut strings are plucked downward with the knuckle side of the index finger and the inside of the thumb. The hollowed canoe shaped wooden body resonates a percussive tone created by knuckles slapping the camel neck top of the body while the thumb and index finger are plucking the strings. The Gnawa () (or Gnaoua, Ghanawa, Ghanawi, Gnawi'; ) are an ethnic group inhabiting Morocco, that had been brought as slaves from the West African Sahel. The name Gnawa originated in the indigenous language of North Africa and the Sahara, Sahara Desert. The phonology of this term according to the grammatical principles of Berber languages, Berber is ''agnaw'' (singular) and ''ignawen'' (plural), which means "black person." Gnawa music (Ar. ) is a body of Morocco, Moroccan Religious music, religious songs and rhythms. Emerging in the 16th and 17th centuries, Gnawa music developed through the cultural fusion of West Africans brought to Morocco, notably the Hausa people, Hausa, Fula people, Fulani, and Bambara people, Bambara peoples, whose presence and heritage are reflected in the songs and rituals. Post-grunge
Post-grunge is an offshoot of grunge that has a less abrasive or intense tone than traditional grunge.
