Paroxysmal Tonic Upgaze
Paroxysmal tonic upgaze (PTU) of childhood is a rare and distinctive Neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmological syndrome characterized by episodes (paroxysms) of sustained upward deviation of the eyes. Symptoms normally appear in babies under one year of age and are characterized by an upward stare or gaze, with the eyes rolled back, while the chin is typically held low. Presentation Babies suffering from PTU may exhibit normal or slightly jerky side-to-side eye movement, nausea, irritability, frequent sleep, developmental and language delays, vertigo and loss of muscle tone. The condition is generally regarded as having a benign outcome, in the sense that it improves, rather than worsens over time. The average age of recovery is at about 2.5 years. Genetics This condition has been associated with mutations in the following genes: CACNA1A, GRID2 and SEPSECS.Quade A, Thiel A, Kurth I, Holtgrewe M, Elbracht M, Beule D, Eggermann K, Scholl UI, Häusler M (2019) Paroxysmal ton ...

Phenylthiourea
Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), also known as phenylthiourea (PTU), is an organosulfur thiourea containing a phenyl ring. It has the unusual property that it either tastes very bitter or is virtually tasteless, depending on the genetic makeup of the taster. The ability to taste PTC is often treated as a dominant genetic trait, although inheritance and expression of this trait are somewhat more complex. PTC also inhibits melanogenesis and is used to grow transparent fish. About 70% of people can taste PTC, varying from a low of 58% for Indigenous Australians and indigenous peoples of New Guinea to 98% for indigenous peoples of the Americas. One study has found that non-smokers and those not habituated to coffee or tea have a statistically higher percentage of tasting PTC than the general population. PTC does not occur in food, but related chemicals do, and food choice can be related to a person's ability to taste PTC. History The tested genetic taste phenomenon of PTC was disco ...

Power Transfer Unit
In aviation, a power transfer unit (PTU) is a device that transfers hydraulic power from one of an aircraft's hydraulic systems to another in the event that the other system has failed or been turned off. The PTU is used when, for example, there is right hydraulic system pressure but no left hydraulic system pressure. In this example, the PTU transfers hydraulic power from the right hydraulic system to the left hydraulic system. A PTU consists of a hydraulic motor paired with a hydraulic pump via a shaft.{{Cite web, url=http://okigihan.blogspot.ca/p/power-transfer-unit-ptu-ptu-is-able-to.html, title=Power Transfer Unit (PTU), website=okigihan.blogspot.ca, access-date=2016-11-03 As the connection is purely mechanical, there is no intermixing of hydraulic fluid between the left and right hydraulic systems during PTU operation. Design philosophy Large transport category aircraft with hydraulically powered flight controls and utilities typically have multiple, independent hydraulic ...

Propylthiouracil
Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a medication used to treat hyperthyroidism. This includes hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease and toxic multinodular goiter. In a thyrotoxic crisis it is generally more effective than methimazole. Otherwise it is typically only used when methimazole, surgery, and radioactive iodine is not possible. It is taken by mouth. Common side effects include itchiness, hair loss, parotid swelling, vomiting, muscle pains, numbness, and headache. Other severe side effects include liver problems and low blood cell counts. Use during pregnancy may harm the baby. Propylthiouracil is in the antithyroid family of medications. It works by decreasing the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland and blocking the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3). Propylthiouracil came into medical use in the 1940s. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Side effects Propylthiouracil is generally well tolerated, wi ...
