Portia Tree
''Thespesia populnea'', commonly known as the portia tree (), Pacific rosewood, Indian tulip tree, or milo, among other names, is a species of flowering plant belonging to the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is a tree found commonly on coasts around the world. Although it is confirmed to be native only to the Old World tropics, other authorities consider it to have a wider, possibly pantropical native distribution. It is thought to be an invasive species in Florida and Brazil. Distribution ''Thespesia populnea'' is native to tropical coastlines and is adapted for oceanic dispersal and growth in island environments. It is known from both coasts of Africa, tropical Asia, northern Australia, the Pacific Islands (including Hawaii), the tropical Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico south to Colombia, the West Indies, and Florida in the United States. Its exact native distribution has been debated, with most authorities considering it to be native only to the Old World tropics, s ... Portia (The Merchant Of Venice)
Portia is a female protagonist in '' The Merchant of Venice'' by William Shakespeare. In creating her character, Shakespeare drew from the historical figure of Porcia – the daughter of Cato the Younger – as well as several parts of the Bible. Portia is fond of proverbs, frequently quoting them, which was considered a sign of wisdom and intellect in the Elizabethan era. It has been suggested that the character of Portia was based on Queen Elizabeth, who was reigning at the time the play was written, and who also had a penchant for proverbs. Character In Shakespeare's play, Portia is a wealthy heiress in Belmont. She is bound by a lottery outlined in her father's will, which allows potential suitors to choose one of three caskets made of gold, silver, and lead, respectively. If they choose the correct casket containing Portia's portrait and a scroll, they win her hand in marriage. Portia is glad when two suitors, one driven by greed and another by vanity, fail to choos ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Portia (spider)
''Portia'' is a genus of jumping spider that feeds on other spiders (i.e., they are arachnophagic). They are remarkable for their intelligent hunting behaviour, which suggests that they are capable of learning and problem solving, traits normally attributed to much larger animals. Taxonomy and evolution The genus was established in 1878 by German arachnologist Friedrich Karsch. The fringed jumping spider (''Portia fimbriata'') is the type species. Molecular phylogeny, a technique that compares the DNA of organisms to construct the tree of life, indicates that ''Portia'' is a member of a basal clade (i.e. quite similar to the ancestors of all jumping spiders) and that the '' Spartaeus'', '' Phaeacius'', and '' Holcolaetis'' genera are its closest relatives. Wanless divided the genus ''Portia'' into two species groups: the ''schultzi'' group, in which males' palps have a fixed tibial apophysis; and the ''kenti'' group, in which the apophysis of each palp in the males has a jo ... Anaea Troglodyta
''Anaea troglodyta'', the Florida leafwing, Portia or Florida goatweed butterfly, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is found in southern Florida and on many islands of the Caribbean. In Jamaica, it is known as the Jamaican tropical leafwing and in the Cayman Islands and Cuba it is known as the Cuban red leaf. The wingspan is . Adults are on wing from October to April (dry-season form) and from May to October (wet-season form). The larvae feed on '' Croton cascarilla'' and '' Croton linearis''. Adults feed on rotting fruit, dung and fluids. Although over 230 species have been included in the genus ''Anaea'', Gerardo Lamas (2004) considers all ''Anaea'' populations to represent a single species, ''Anaea troglodyta'' (Fabricius 1775). Subspecies Some authors list the following subspecies, while others treat (most) as valid species or even synonyms: *''Anaea troglodyta troglodyte'' *''Anaea troglodyta astina'' (described from St. Thomas) *'' Anaea troglodyta aidea'' (Ari ... Portia (moon)
Portia is an inner satellite of Uranus. It was discovered from the images taken by ''Voyager 2'' on 3 January 1986, and was given the temporary designation S/1986 U 1. The moon is named after Portia, the heroine of William Shakespeare's play ''The Merchant of Venice''. It is also designated Uranus XII. Portia is the second-largest inner satellite of Uranus after Puck. The Portian orbit, which lies inside Uranus's synchronous orbital radius, is slowly decaying due to tidal deceleration. The moon will one day either break up into a planetary ring or hit Uranus. It is the namesake of a group of satellites called the Portia group, which includes Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Rosalind, Cupid, Belinda, and Perdita. These satellites have similar orbits and photometric properties. Little is known about Portia beyond its dimensions of about 156 × 126 km, orbit, and geometric albedo of about 0.08. The Merchant Of Venice
''The Merchant of Venice'' is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. A merchant in Venice named Antonio defaults on a large loan taken out on behalf of his dear friend, Bassanio, and provided by a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, with seemingly inevitable fatal consequences. Although classified as a comedy in the First Folio and sharing certain aspects with Shakespeare's other romantic comedies, the play is most remembered for its dramatic scenes, and it is best known for the character Shylock and his famous demand for a " pound of flesh". The play contains two famous speeches, that of Shylock, " Hath not a Jew eyes?" on the subject of humanity, and that of Portia on " the quality of mercy". Debate exists on whether the play is anti-Semitic, with Shylock's insistence on his legal right to the pound of flesh being in opposition to his seemingly universal plea for the rights of all people suffering discrimination.
