PLA General Armaments Department
People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department (GAD; ) was in charge of equipping and arming the People's Liberation Army of China, as well as overseeing and improving military technology. Founded in April 1998, it was one of the four "general departments" that fell under the Central Military Commission. Various space launch sites across the country also fell under its jurisdiction. The department was disbanded in January 2016 and the new agency, Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission was founded. Central Military Commission (China)
The Central Military Commission (CMC) is the highest military leadership body of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the China, People's Republic of China (PRC), which heads the People's Liberation Army (PLA), the People's Armed Police (PAP), and the Militia (China), Militia of China. There are technically two separate commissions; the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party and the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. Under the arrangement of "one institution with two names", both commissions have identical personnel, organization and function, and operate under both the party and state systems. Equipment Development Department Of The Central Military Commission
The Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission ( zh , s = 中央军委装备发展部 ) is a first-level unit of deputy theater grade under the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. It was founded on January 11, 2016, under Xi Jinping's military reforms. The department mission is to coordinate, oversee, and foster the development and acquisition of military technology. General Zhang Youxia served as the first director. The current director is Xu Xueqiang. It also registers the patents related to military technology. The China Manned Space Agency is also hosted there and the department plays a critical role in the Chinese space program. Zhang Youxia
Zhang Youxia (; born July 1950) is a Chinese general in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and currently the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC). Zhang previously served as Head of the CMC Equipment Development Department, and its predecessor, the PLA General Armaments Department, from 2012 to 2017. He is the son of General Zhang Zongxun. He is a veteran of the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War and one of the few serving generals in China with war experience. Zhang Yulin
Zhang Yulin (; born January 1958) is an astronautic engineer and lieutenant general of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China. He has been Deputy Director of the PLA General Armaments Department since 2011, and previously served as the President of the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), and Commander of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Biography In 1958, Zhang was born in Qianyang County, Shaanxi Province. In 1978 Zhang entered NUDT, majoring in liquid rocket engine technology. Zhang graduated BE and ME from NUDT. From July 1984 Zhang was a lecturer and researcher at NUDT working on rocket engine dynamics and control. Wang Hongyao (; born November 1951) is a retired general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). He served as Political Commissar of the PLA General Armaments Department, and its successor organization, the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission, from 2011 to 2017. Biography Wang Hongyao was born in November 1951 in Jining, Shandong Province. He holds a graduate degree from the PLA National Defence University. Wang joined the PLA in December 1969, and served in the 199th division of the 67th Group Army. From 1993 to 1996 he worked in the political department of the 199th division.
