Three Letter Acronym
A three-letter acronym (TLA), or three-letter abbreviation is, as the phrase suggests, an abbreviation consisting of three letters. The term has a special status among abbreviations and to some is considered wordplay, humorous since the term ''TLA'' is itself a three-letter acronym; it is an autological word. Most TLAs are initialisms (the initial letter of each word of a phrase), but most are not acronyms in the strict sense since they are pronounced by saying each letter, as in ''APA (other), APA'' . Some are true acronyms (pronounced as a word) such as computed axial tomography, CAT (as in CAT scan) which is pronounced as cat, the animal. Examples * Academic testing: ACT (test), ACT, SAT * Air Navigation Services (air navigation service provider, ANS): Aeronautical Information Service, AIS, air traffic control, ATC, air traffic management, ATM, air traffic service, ATS, communication, navigation and surveillance, CNS, flight information service, FIS, aviation meteoro ...

Passenger Boarding Bridge
A jet bridge is an enclosed connector which most commonly extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane, and in some instances from a port to a boat or ship, allowing passengers to board and disembark without heading outside and being exposed to harsh weather. Depending on building design, sill heights, fueling positions, and operational requirements, a jet bridge may be fixed or movable, swinging radially, or extending in length. The jetway was invented by Frank Der Yuen. Similar devices are used for astronauts to enter spacecraft, which are installed at the appropriate height of the launch tower. History Before the introduction of jet bridges, passengers normally boarded an aircraft by walking along the ground-level ramp and climbing a set of movable stairs, or airstairs on aircraft so equipped. Mobile staircases or "ramp stairs" are employed at many airports around the world, particularly smaller airports and terminals supporting low cost carriers. United Airli ...

Provider Backbone Bridges
IEEE 802.1ah is an amendment to the IEEE 802.1Q networking standard which adds support for Provider Backbone Bridges. It includes an architecture and a set of protocols for routing over a provider's network, allowing interconnection of multiple provider bridge networks without losing each customer's individually defined VLANs. It was initially created by Nortel before being submitted to the IEEE 802.1 committee for standardization. The final version was approved by the IEEE in June 2008 and has been integrated into IEEE 802.1Q-2011. History The now-ubiquitous Ethernet was initially defined as a local area network (LAN) technology to interconnect the computers within a small organization in which these host computers were very close in proximity to each other. Over the years, Ethernet has become such a popular technology that it became the default Data Link Layer (OSI Layer 2) mechanism for data transport. This created a need for extending the Ethernet from a customer LAN brid ...
