P. J. Ramster
Percy John Ramster, better known as P.J. Ramster, was an Australians, Australian film director. He also ran an acting school, and his students often appeared in his films. One of his students was Paulette McDonagh who, along with her sisters, hired Ramster to direct their first film, but removed him during production and Paulette took over. Another one of Ramster's students was William Shepherd, who later went on to become one of the leading editors in Australia. He worked for a time as an actor. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. On 3 October, Prime Minister Bob Hawke officially opened the NFSA's headquarters in Canberra. The Russell Affair
''The Russell Affair'' is a 1928 Australian silent film directed by P. J. Ramster. It was Ramster's last film. Synopsis An artist, Stephen Patrick, falls in love with his model, Juliette (Adrienne Stewart). Juliette is in love with Dr Lonsdale, who is engaged to a wealthy widow, Ruby Russell (Jessica Harcourt). Ruby destroys Patrick's paintings of Juliette in a jealous rage, but manages to get Juliette blamed. A blackmailer, Arthur White (Gaston Mervale), complicates things. Production The movie was financed partly by Juliette De La Ruze, a woman anxious to get involved in film production. Only part of the film survives today and it is held by the National Film and Sound Archive. Plot Barry Manton, William Carter, the son of Sir James, falls in love with a dancer, Bebe Doree but his father disapproves and bribes Bebe to disappear. Hurt, Barry leaves home and becomes a labourer on the docks. He meets poor but honest Lola Quayle in a cabaret and offers her a place to live after she resists the advances of a pub owner. They stay in separate rooms but fall in love during a storm and he later marries her. Barry's father wants him to return home and sends a solicitor over to approach him. James Owen Sullivan (February 9, 1981 – December 28, 2009), also known by his stage name the Rev (shortened version of ''the Reverend Tholomew Plague''), was an American musician, best known as a member of the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold, where he played drums, piano and provided backing and co-lead vocals. He was also the lead vocalist/pianist in the avant-garde metal band Pinkly Smooth and drummed for the ska punk band Suburban Legends from 1998 to 1999. It is a high society melodrama about a man forced to be inspected by a doctor prior to his marriage, who discovers he has venereal disease. It is considered a lost film. Plot Dr Aubrey Mather, an advocate for compulsory medical examinations for both the sexes prior to marriage, consents to the marriage of his daughter, Dorothy, to Count Delvo, on condition that he can present a clean bill of health. The Count is revealed to have a general disease. His doctor, Stirling Worth (Fred Oppey), advises him to postpone the wedding but the Count wants to go ahead and tells Dr Worth to remain silent. Paulette McDonagh
Paulette de Vere McDonagh (11 June 1901 – 30 August 1978), was an Australian film director, who often worked in collaboration with her sisters Phyllis and Isabella. In 1933 it was claimed she was one of only five female film directors in the world. At one stage they had offers to go to Hollywood. "Fox Films offered to send us," said Phyllis McDonagh, "But we were sensible girls. We sat down and talked and decided we would end up very small fish in a big pond. At home we had work and a reputation." Life and career Paulette McDangh was born on 11 June 1901 in Sydney and one of seven children born to Annie Jane (Anita) Amora and John Michael McDonagh. It is a South Seas romance starring Jack Chalmers, a Sydney lifesaver who was famous at the time for trying to save a swimmer from a shark. It is considered to be a lost film. Plot Four men and a young woman (Coo-ee Knight) are shipwrecked on an island in the South Seas. The men fight over the woman.
