P. J. McElroy
Patrick Joseph McElroy (1932 – 28 October 2022) was a Gaelic footballer from Northern Ireland. He played with club sides Liatroim Fontenoys and Glenn, and at inter-county level with the Down senior football team. Career McElroy first played Gaelic football as a schoolboy at St. Colman's College in Newry. He was at midfield on the college's first MacRory Cup-winning team in 1949, before retaining the title in 1950. McElroy's performances for St. Colman's resulted in him being selected for the Ulster colleges team. He later lined out with University College Dublin and won a Sigerson Cup medal in 1953. At club level, McElroy began his career with Liatroim Fontenoys before later winning consecutive Down SFC medals with Glenn in 1962 and 1963. McElroy made his first championship appearance for the Down senior football team against Derry in 1953. Derry GAA
The Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) () or Derry GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. It is responsible for Gaelic games in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland (the GAA refers to the county as Derry). The county board is also responsible for the Derry county teams. 1960 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1960 All-Ireland Football Championship was the 74th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter county, inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 1 May 1960 and ended on 25 September 1960. Fermanagh back in the Ulster championship for the first time since 1948. Kerry GAA, Kerry entered the championship as the 1959 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, defending champions. On 25 September 1960, Down GAA, Down won the championship following a 2–10 to 0–8 defeat of Kerry in the All-Ireland final. This was their first All-Ireland title. Ulster Hospital
The Ulster Hospital, commonly known as the Ulster, is a teaching hospital in Dundonald (at the eastern edge of Belfast) in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is within the townland of Ballyregan, beside the A20 road. It provides acute services in the North Down, Ards and Castlereagh council areas, as well as east Belfast. It is managed by the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust. History The hospital was first founded as the Ulster Hospital for Women and Sick Children in 1872. It was initially located on Chichester Street in Belfast City Centre but moved to Templemore Avenue in Mountpottinger in 1892. The first X-ray machine at the hospital was installed in 1920 and Dr Beath was employed to operate it. While located in Mountpottinger the hospital was severely damaged in the Belfast Blitz in 1941. Armagh GAA
The Armagh County Board () or Armagh GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. John McKnight (Gaelic Footballer)
John McKnight (1932 – 9 July 2017) was a Gaelic footballer whose league and championship career at senior level with the Armagh county team lasted seven seasons from 1953 to 1959. Born in Killeavy, County Armagh, McKnight was raised in a family that had no immediate link with Gaelic games. He first played Gaelic football with Ballybot in the Newry Street League competitions. McKnight and his three brothers would, in time, all line out for Armagh. McKnight played competitive Gaelic football during his schooldays at Abbey CBS Grammar School. Here he won a Rannafast Cup medal. During his studies at University College Dublin he won Sigerson Cup medals in 1954 and 1956. After graduating in law in 1956, McKnight moved to Ballyshannon where he played Gaelic football with the Aodh Ruadh club. The 1962 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 76th staging of All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 29 April 1962 and ended on 23 September 1962. Games were shown on television for the first time ever. The Sam Maguire Cup (), often referred to as Sam or The Sam, is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the main competition in the sport of Gaelic football. The Sam Maguire Cup was first presented to Kildare, winners of the 1928 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1980s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1988. The GAA organises the series of games, which are played during the summer months. The All-Ireland Football Final was traditionally played on the third or fourth Sunday in September at Croke Park in Dublin. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) () is the premier inter-county competition in Gaelic football. County (Gaelic games), County teams compete against each other and the winner is declared All-Ireland Champions. The National Football League (NFL; ) is an annual Gaelic football competition between the senior county teams of Ireland plus London. Sponsored by Allianz, it is officially known as the Allianz National Football League. The Gaelic Athletic Association organises the league.
