P. Govindasamy Pillai
P. Govindasamy Pillai (Tamil: பி கோவிந்தசாமி பிள்ளை; 1887 – 21 July 1980), better known as PGP, was a revered successful South Indian businessman and philanthropist in Singapore. He was regarded as one of Singapore’s early pioneers who helped shaped the nation-state by creating a once-famous chain called PGP stores during the 1900s which expanded to Johor Bahru and Malacca. Pillai was also highly regarded for his contributions to the South Indian community in Singapore, particularly his donations to the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple. He was notably one of the founding members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce in 1937, Ramakrishna Mission Singapore, as well as the Singapore Indian Association. Punch Coomaraswamy (16 October 1925 – 8 January 1999) was a Singaporean judge, diplomat and politician who served as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore between 1966 and 1970, and Singapore Ambassador to the United States between 1976 and 1984. He had also served as Singapore's Ambassador to Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Fiji, India, and Sri Lanka. Education Coomaraswamy was the son of Kandiah and Chellam Coomaraswamy. Kandiah Coomaraswamy was a medical doctor who served in the then Straits Settlements Medical Service from 1916 to 1955, when he retired. Coomaraswamy received his early education at the English College in Johor and later obtained his law degree from the University of Nottingham in England. Potong Pasir is a housing estate located between Toa Payoh and Sennett Estate in the Central Region of Singapore. For urban planning purposes, it is classified under the Toa Payoh area. Politically, Potong Pasir had been the longest-held opposition ward in one-party dominant Singapore. Its Opposition Member of Parliament Chiam See Tong held the ward from 1984 to 2011.
