Oscura Mountains
Oscura Mountains, originally known to the Spanish as the ''Sierra Oscura'', are a ridge of mountains, trending north and south, east of the Jornada del Muerto and west of the Tularosa Valley. It is located in Socorro County and Lincoln County, New Mexico. Their highest elevation is Oscura Peak at 8,625 feet / 2,629 meters. Its southern end is at and its north end is at near North Oscura Peak. The Oscura Mountains lie northwest of the lower lying Little Burro Mountains divided by the Oscura Gap. Mockingbird Gap
Mockingbirds are a group of New World passerine birds from the family Mimidae. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians, often loudly and in rapid succession. There are about 17 species in two genera, although three species of mockingbird from the Galapagos Islands were formerly separated into a third genus, ''Nesomimus''. San Andres Mountains
The San Andres Mountains are a mountain range in the southwestern U.S. state of New Mexico, in the counties of Socorro, Sierra, and Doña Ana. The range extends about 75 miles (120 km) north to south, but are only about 12 miles (19 km) wide at their widest. The highest peak in the San Andres Mountains is Salinas Peak, at 8,965 feet (2,733 m). Geography Though nearly contiguous with the Organ Mountains to the south, separated by St. Augustine Pass (elevation and U.S. Highway 70, the two are very distinct geologically and botanically. Jornada Del Muerto
The name Jornada del Muerto translates from Spanish as "Single Day's Journey of the Dead Man" or even "Route of the Dead Man, though the modern literal translation is closer to "The Working Day of the Dead". It was the name given by the Spanish conquistadors to the Jornada del Muerto Desert Endorheic basin, basin, and the particularly dry stretch of a route through it from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Las Cruces to Socorro, New Mexico. The trail led northward from central Spanish colonial New Spain, present-day Mexico, to the farthest reaches of the viceroyalty in northern Santa Fe de Nuevo México, Nuevo México Province (the area around the upper valley of the Rio Grande). Little Burro Mountains
The Little Burro Mountains are a short long mountain range located in Grant County, New Mexico. The range lies adjacent to the southeast border of the larger Big Burro Mountains. The Little Burro Mountains are located 8 mi southwest of Silver City. State Road 90 from Silver City skirts the southern perimeter of the range on its route to Lordsburg. The Continental Divide traverses the southern ridgeline of the Little Burro's and continues on its southwest flank. Description and region The Little Burro Mountains are only a 15 mi long range. North Oscura Peak
North Oscura Peak, is a summit in the Oscura Mountains in Socorro County, New Mexico is the location of an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) site in the northern portion of the White Sands Missile Range. It rises to an elevation of . History North Oscura Peak was a former Army missile tracking site. Designed to withstand rocket strikes, the walls at the site are thick, with 1,200 tons of concrete embedded six feet in bedrock. In 1972 a large concrete pad was built with associated power to operate the LAD (Laser Acquisition and Direction) system. It was named the Laser Airborne Simulation and Test (LAST) Site. This was a test program by the Air Force Weapons Laboratory Laser Division at Kirtland AFB.
