Oyrot Autonomous Oblast
The Gorno-Altai Autonomous Oblast () was an autonomous oblast of the Soviet Union, inhabited by the Altai people. Formed as the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast () in 1922, it was later renamed in 1948. It was upgraded into an ASSR in 1990, shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It corresponds to the current Altai Republic. Gorno-Altaysk (, ; ; historically, pre-1932: Ulala) is the capital town of the Altai Republic, Russia. The population stands at around 64,000 people as of 2020 with steady growth over the recent years. In the past, the town was known as ''Ulala'' (until June 23, 1932) and then ''Oyrot-Tura'' (June 23, 1932 - January 7, 1948). The Altai people (, ), also the Altaians (, ), are a Turkic peoples, Turkic ethnic group of indigenous peoples of Siberia mainly living in the Altai Republic, Russia. Several thousand of the Altaians also live in Mongolia (Altai Mountains) and China (Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang) but are Unrecognized ethnic groups in China, not officially recognized as a distinct group and listed under the name "Oirats" as a part of the Mongols, as well as in Kazakhstan where they number around 200. An Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR, ) was a type of administrative unit in the Soviet Union (USSR), created for certain ethnic groups to be the titular nations of. The ASSRs had a status lower than the constituent union republics of the USSR, but higher than the autonomous oblasts and the autonomous okrugs. The Altai Republic, also known as the Gorno-Altai Republic, is a republic of Russia located in southern Siberia.
