Overland Telegraph (book)
''Overland Telegraph'' is a 1955 Australian book by Frank Clune about the construction of the Overland Telegraph. It is one of Clune's best known works. ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' called it "one of Mr Clune's best books" although he felt "the actual building of the O.T. becomes rather tedious in print and he must have realised it when he got into his book." ''The Daily Telegraph'' called it "one of Clune's better books". '' The Bulletin'' said the book was "so closely fastened to a piece of our essential folklore that one cannot but welcome it, cannot but recommend it—and cannot but wish it were infinitely better." Frank Clune
Francis Patrick Clune, OBE, (27 November 189311 March 1971) was a best-selling Australian writer, travel writer and popular historian. Early life and career Clune was born in Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney in 1893, and grew up in Redfern. He left home at 15 and for five years lived the life of an adventurer, claiming to have had twenty-five different jobs by the age of 17, and enlisting with the US Army in Kansas 26 October 1911, deserting and going to sea. Clune joined the AIF in 1915 during World War I and was soon with the 16th Battalion at Gallipoli. He was wounded in action and repatriated a year after being wounded in both legs. He married Maud Roy in 1916; they divorced in 1920. He married again in 1923 to artist and sculptor Thelma Cecily Smith (1900–1992), established himself as a tax consultant and by 1930 had settled in Vaucluse. Overland Telegraph
The Australian Overland Telegraph Line was an electrical telegraph system for sending messages the between Darwin, in what is now the Northern Territory of Australia, and Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Completed in 1872 (with a line to Western Australia added in 1877), it allowed fast communication between Australia and the rest of the world. When it was linked to the Java-to-Darwin submarine telegraph cable several months later, the communication time with Europe dropped from months to hours; Australia was no longer so isolated from the rest of the world. The line was one of the great engineering feats of 19th-century Australia and probably the most significant milestone in the history of telegraphy in Australia. Established in June 1931, Cinesound developed out of a group of companies centred on Greater Union, Greater Union Theatres that covered all facets of the film process, from production to distribution and exhibition.
