Outside Chance (song)
"Outside Chance" is a song written by lyricist Glenn Crocker and composer Warren Zevon, initially recorded by American pop band the Turtles in 1966. Zevon and the Turtles were label-mates on White Whale Records, being introduced to one another by label founders Ted Feigin and Lee Lasseff after a meeting where Zevon's music was played for the Turtles. "Outside Chance" was inspired by the Beatles "Paperback Writer" and features a prominent twelve-string jangle guitar riff influenced by the Beatles' "Taxman". The Turtles recorded the song at Western Recorders in June 1966 together with producer Bones Howe and session musician Larry Knechtel. White Whale released "Outside Chance" as the Turtles' fifth single release in July 1966 with "We'll Meet Again" as the B-side. Riff
A riff is a short, repeated motif or figure in the melody or accompaniment of a musical composition. Riffs are most often found in rock music, punk, heavy metal music, Latin, funk, and jazz, although classical music is also sometimes based on a riff, as in Ravel's Boléro. Riffs can be as simple as a tenor saxophone honking a simple, catchy rhythmic figure, or as complex as the riff-based variations in the head arrangements played by the Count Basie Orchestra. John Barbata
John Barbata (April 1, 1945 – May 8, 2024) was an American drummer who was active especially in pop and rock bands in the 1960s and 1970s, both as a band member and as a session drummer. Barbata served as the drummer for The Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane (for its final album and tour only), and Jefferson Starship (from 1974 to 1978). Barbata claimed to have played on over 60 albums in an uncredited capacity. Early life Barbata was born on Easter, April 1, 1945, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Martina and Charles Barbata. He was raised in Saranac Lake, New York, till the age of seven and later in Nutley, New Jersey. Joel Larson
Joel Larson (born April 29, 1947) is an American rock drummer and percussionist who is known as a founding member of The Merry-Go-Round and for being associated with the Turtles and the Grass Roots. Early life He lived near Lincoln Park until he was 12 years old. He took up drumming at the age of 12 and moved near Avalon Park until he was 17. During these five years he honed his skills in the rock music scene of the early 1960s. Don Murray (drummer)
Donald Ray Murray (November 8, 1945 – March 22, 1996) was an American drummer and Hanna-Barbera animator, best known for his work with the Turtles. After leaving the group, Murray played with Paul Williams's psychedelic folk group the Holy Mackerel. In the 1980s he went on to perform with the newly formed Surfaris. Early life Murray grew up in Inglewood, California and started playing drums at the age of 15. He became popular playing high school dances with the band the Crossfires. Career The Turtles The Crossfires released one album, Out Of Control, in 1963.
