''Our Wives'' is a 1913 in film, 1913 comedy short silent film directed by James Lackaye for Vitagraph Studios. It premiered on September 20, 1913. The film's story was adapted from Anthony E. Wills's three act play ''Our Wives'' (1910). Wills was a playwright and novelist who died young in 1912. Vitagraph Studios purchased the film rights to all of Wills's works in 1913. Cast * Harry T. Wally Van (born Charles Wallace Van Nostrand; September 27, 1880 – May 9, 1974) was an American actor and film director of the silent era. Early years Van was born Charles Wallace Van Nostrand on September 27, 1880, in New Hyde Park, New York. His Dutch ancestors settled in New York in 1638. His father, Charles A. Van Nostrand, worked in the United States Customs Office, Van had two sisters and a brother. After being educated in Brooklyn's public schools, he graduated from the School of Sciences in New York City. Friends in college began calling him Wally Van. He graduated from a technical school as a civil engineer, but later he sold leather goods, then worked as an electrical engineer. As an engineer, he worked for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. A job maintaining engines of speedboats owned by the president of Vitagraph Studios provided an opening for him to get into films. Vitagraph Studios, also known as the Vitagraph Company of America, was a United States motion picture studio. It was founded by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, as the American Vitagraph Company. By 1907, it was the most prolific American film production company, producing many famous silent films. It was bought by Warner Bros. in 1925. History In 1896, English ''émigré'' Blackton was moonlighting as a reporter/artist for the New York ''Evening World'' when he was sent to interview Thomas Edison about his new film projector. The inventor talked the entrepreneurial reporter into buying a set of films and a projector. A year later, Blackton and business partner Smith founded the American Vitagraph Company in direct competition with Edison. A third partner, distributor William "Pop" Rock, joined in 1899. Niles Welch
Niles Eugene Welch (July 29, 1888 – November 21, 1976) was an American performer on Broadway, and a leading man in a number of silent and early talking motion pictures from the early 1910s through the 1930s. Early life A native of Hartford, Connecticut, after graduating from ''St. Paul's School'', Welch attended Yale and Columbia University. Later he joined a stock company, and from there toured the U.S. in vaudeville. The first film he worked in was ''The Stranger in Grey'' with the Eastern Vitagraph Studios. Career After spending four years on the legitimate stage, Welch started his screen career appearing with World Film Corporation, Universal, Pathé Studios and Goldwyn Pictures. Lillian Walker (April 21, 1887 – October 10, 1975), born Lillian Wolke, was an American film actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 170 films, most of them shorts, between 1909 and 1934. Biography ''Photoplay'' magazine's trade publication ''Stars of the Photoplay 1916'' stated: "Lillian Walker is a feminine confection composed of dimples, golden hair and curves. She was born in Brooklyn and as an artist's model by her beauty attracted attention and she got her opportunity on the stage. All her picture appearances have been Vitagraph productions, and she is best known for her work in ''Cinderella's Slipper'' 915and the "Miss Tomboy" series 914 In 1918, she set up her own production company, Lillian Walker Pictures Corporation, to make films in which she starred.
